Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

The penthouse apartment in Las Lomas de Chapultepec sat behind three layers of armored security gates, surrounded by centuries-old pine trees that blocked out the hum of the city below. For seven days, it became my command center. A team of three private doctors, sworn to absolute non-disclosure, monitored my recovery while a team of corporate analysts from Serrano International set up their servers in the secondary dining room.

My ribs were bound in high-compression medical braces, and the swelling around my right eye had faded into a faint, yellowish shadow that could easily be covered with professional foundation. I stood before a floor-to-ceiling smart glass monitor, a cup of black coffee in my hand, watching the real-time financial tracking of Grupo Montiel.

"They just finalized the logistics manifest for the Salgado merger," reported Fernando, the lead forensic analyst assigned to my team. He was a young man with sharp features who had spent four years tracking money laundering for the federal government before entering the private sector. "Alejandro signed the preliminary intent contract yesterday at 4:00 PM. The formal announcement is scheduled for the engagement party this coming Saturday at the St. Regis."

"What’s the financial reality of his company right now, Fernando?" I asked, watching the red lines on the screen.

"It’s a house of cards, Miss Cruz," he said, tapping his keyboard to bring up a hidden layer of debt ledgers.

Grupo Montiel's Internal VulnerabilitiesThe Santa Fe Debt: They owe three hundred and forty million pesos to Banco Central for the construction of Montiel Tower. The loan is subject to an immediate acceleration clause if their liquidity ratio drops below 1.2.

The Salgado Lifeline: The five hundred million pesos from Renata’s father isn't a simple investment; it’s a structured bailout. If the Salgados pull their capital, Grupo Montiel will default on their corporate bonds within seventy-two hours.

The Hidden Asset Leak: Over the last eighteen months, Alejandro has transferred forty-two million pesos of corporate cash into a private account under his mother’s name, Doña Teresa Montiel, to fund her real estate purchases in Miami. It’s a blatant case of corporate asset stripping.

"He took my career, told me I was nothing without his name, and all the while he was stealing from his own shareholders to keep his mother in luxury," I said, my hand tightening on my coffee cup.

"There’s more," Fernando added. "The four security guards who attacked you in the parking garage... they weren't third-party contractors. They are on the payroll of a subsidiary company called Montiel Seguridad Privatizada. The operational log for that night lists their assignment as 'Special Asset Protection' directly ordered by Alejandro’s personal assistant, Mauricio Leal."

The double doors opened, and Elena Torres walked in, carrying a large, heavy silver box lined with midnight-blue velvet.

"A delivery arrived at your old apartment this morning, Miss Cruz," Elena said, setting the box on the glass table. "Doña Teresa’s driver attempted to drop it off, but our security team intercepted him. It seems your former mother-in-law is getting anxious."

I opened the box. Inside lay a heavy, antique gold bracelet encrusted with emeralds—the Montiel family heirloom Teresa had given me on my wedding day, accompanied by a typed note.

Valeria, Mauricio informed me you signed the papers. Return this piece immediately. It belongs to a woman of lineage, not a girl we picked up from the suburbs. Do not make me send the drivers to collect it from whatever cheap hotel you are staying in.

I picked up the heavy gold piece, feeling the cool weight of the emeralds against my palm. This was the bracelet she had made me clean with a toothbrush for three hours because she claimed my "sweaty hands" had tarnished the gold.

"Elena," I said, dropping the bracelet back into the velvet box with a sharp, metallic clang. "Send a courier to Doña Teresa. Tell her I will return the heirloom to her personally. On Saturday night. In front of her new daughter-in-law."
