Chapter 4 - The Asset Freeze

By Friday morning, the story had broken across every local news station and newspaper in the state:

PROMINENT VANGUARD EXECUTIVE CHARGED IN ATTEMPTED POISONING OF WIFE AND SON.

"Daniel Carter, 36, faces charges of attempted aggravated murder, child endangerment, and insurance fraud after police discovered high-grade agricultural pesticide in his family's dinner..."

I sat at the kitchen table of my sister Clara’s house, wearing one of her oversized sweatshirts. The physical poison was mostly out of my system, but a deep, throbbing ache remained in my stomach and soul.

Marcus Vance sat across from me, three thick legal pads spread out before him.

“Daniel’s defense team is already playing dirty,” Marcus said, sliding a document across the table. “His primary attorney, Richard Hayes—a high-priced corporate defense lawyer hired by Chloe’s wealthy father—has filed an emergency motion to freeze all marital assets.”

I frowned. “Why?”

“They’re claiming that since the house and main accounts are in joint names, you cannot use any funds from those accounts for Noah’s medical bills or your legal representation until the trial is concluded,” Marcus explained. “They’re trying to starve you out, Rachel. They know Noah’s dialysis costs twelve thousand dollars a day without full insurance pre-authorization. They want to force you into a plea bargain where you accept a reduced charge for Daniel in exchange for releasing his funds.”

I stared at the document. It was a cold, calculated move designed to squeeze the air out of my chest before the trial even began.

“How much money is in my personal account?” I asked.

“Four thousand dollars,” Clara chimed in from the stove, her voice furious. “Daniel swept the joint savings account three hours before he served that dinner! He transferred three hundred thousand dollars into an offshore account in the Cayman Islands!”

Marcus smiled—a slow, dangerous smile that made his sharp silver eyes glint in the morning sun.

“He thought he swept it,” Marcus corrected gently. “What Daniel didn't realize is that my firm specializes in forensic asset recovery for victims of violent crime.”

Marcus pulled out a red folder from his briefcase.

“Ten years ago, Rachel, when your grandfather passed away, he left you a small family farm in rural Ohio, correct?”

“Yes,” I said, puzzled. “It’s just sixty acres of cornfields. It brings in about five thousand dollars a year in land lease fees.”

“Daniel didn't pay attention to the deed paperwork,” Marcus continued, tapping his pencil on the table. “When you got married, you never converted that property into marital property. It remains 100% your separate, pre-marital asset. And three days ago, an energy firm made a formal offer to purchase the mineral rights beneath that land for oil exploration.”

Marcus turned the red folder toward me.

“The offer is one point four million dollars, cash upfront,” Marcus said softly. “The wire transfer was cleared thirty minutes ago. Daniel Carter cannot touch a single cent of it. His lawyers cannot freeze it. And every dime of it is sitting in an irrevocable trust for Noah’s medical recovery.”

Tears spilled over my eyelashes, hot and fast.

For seven years, Daniel had made me feel as if I were entirely dependent on him. He had controlled our budget, managed our investments, and reminded me daily that his executive salary paid for our high-rise lifestyle while my part-time job at the library was just "pin money."

He had believed he was leaving me with nothing.

Instead, the land my grandfather had worked with his bare hands had just delivered the sword I needed to destroy him.

“Marcus,” I wiped my cheek with the back of my sleeve. “I want you to hire the best pediatric nephrologist in the country for Noah. I don't care what it costs.”

“Already done,” Marcus replied, leaning back. “Dr. Aris Thorne from Johns Hopkins is landing at the airport in two hours. And as for Daniel’s defense lawyer...”

Marcus picked up his pen and signed a document with a sharp flourish.

“I’m filing a counter-suit under the Federal RICO statute for fraudulent asset diversion and attempted murder for financial gain. We aren't just defending you, Rachel. We’re taking everything he ever touched.”
