Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Life
By sunset, the sky over the Pacific Ocean had turned a dazzling array of deep crimson, lavender, and brilliant gold.
Marcus had driven back to the city, leaving us in our quiet sanctuary by the sea.
I walked down the wooden steps from the porch onto the warm sand, carrying a soft blanket and a basket of fresh peaches, strawberries, and lemonade.
Noah was sitting near the edge of the water, building a massive sandcastle complete with stone towers, shell walls, and a tiny driftwood flag stuck on the highest peak.
“Look, Mommy!” Noah yelled, pointing proudly at his creation as I spread the blanket beside him. “It’s an impenetrable fortress! No wave can knock it down!”
I dropped to my knees beside him, pressing a kiss against his sun-warmed forehead.
“It’s the strongest castle I’ve ever seen, buddy,” I smiled, smoothing his soft hair back from his forehead.
He looked up at me, his deep gray eyes clear, bright, and completely free of the dark terror that had once filled them on a freezing bathroom floor eight months ago.
“Mommy?” he asked softly, sitting back on his heels.
“Yes, my sweet boy?”
“Are we going to live here forever and ever?”
I looked out over the endless ocean, where the sun was dipping below the horizon, painting the world in a warm, eternal light that made every wave glitter like liquid gold.
I thought about the dark night when I had huddled on a cold tile floor, holding my breath, clutching a phone in my fist, listening to a door splinter open. I thought about the fear that had almost swallowed us whole.
And then I looked at my son—healthy, safe, loved, and free.
I pulled him into my lap, wrapping my arms around his warm chest, resting my chin against his shoulder as the soft ocean breeze blew around us.

“Yes, Noah,” I whispered into the quiet, beautiful evening. “We’re going to live here forever. The dark is over, baby. We made it to the light.”
Noah smiled, wrapped his small arms around my neck, and rested his head against my chest as the ocean waves sang their endless, safe lullaby into the night.
