Chapter 8 - The Forgotten Flat

In a small, dilapidated studio apartment on the far outskirts of South Philadelphia, the sound of rain clattering against rusted window frames filled the tiny room.
Grant Whitmore sat on the edge of a stained twin mattress resting directly on the linoleum floor.
He wore a faded grey sweatshirt and sweatpants he had bought at a discount store. His hair was unwashed, streaked with grey, his face covered in a rough, unkempt beard.
On the small wooden table beside his bed sat an empty bottle of cheap whiskey, a half-eaten box of cold takeout, and a small, flickering television set.
The local news anchor’s voice drifted through the small room:
"In financial news today, shares of Bennett-Meridian Group reached an all-time high following the opening bell ringing in New York led by newly appointed Chairwoman Eleanor Bennett-Whitmore. Meanwhile, public records confirm that former mistress Vanessa Hale has officially surrendered her remaining luxury assets and taken a job as a junior assistant at a boutique PR firm in New Jersey..."
Grant stared at the tiny screen.
He saw Eleanor standing on the NYSE podium. She looked stunning—dignified, powerful, loved by thousands of workers, flanked by the most respected legal and business minds in the nation.
He reached for his phone—a cheap, prepaid flip phone—and looked at his banking application.
ACCOUNT BALANCE: $12,410.15.
He had spent over sixty thousand dollars in three weeks just paying off legal retainers, outstanding tax penalties, and rent for this miserable, leaky room.
He looked at his hands—hands that used to hold gold pens, sign multi-billion-dollar mergers, and wear fifty-thousand-dollar watches. Now, they were rough, dry, and trembling.
Suddenly, his phone buzzed with an incoming text notification from an unknown number.
He opened it frantically, his heart leaping into his throat, hoping—praying—it was Eleanor offering him a small consulting role, a tiny gesture of mercy, a crumb from her table.
The text was an automated alert from a local storage facility:
NOTICE: Unit #402 (Grant Whitmore) is scheduled for public lien auction due to non-payment of $150 monthly rental fee.
Grant dropped the phone onto the floor.

He buried his face in his hands and wept—loud, ugly, agonizing sobs that echoed off the thin, cracking walls of the empty room.
He had traded a kingdom for a shadow. And now, the shadow was gone, and he was alone in the dark.
