Chapter 6 - The Harvest

The morning of the harvest was tense and silent. In Operating Room 4, pediatric hematology specialists placed Ronan under general anesthesia to perform multiple bone marrow aspirations from his posterior iliac crests. Down the hall, in the bone marrow transplant suite, Keely lay prepared, her body completely depleted of its own stem cells by the harsh pre-transplant conditioning. Her immune system was down to zero. Without the incoming cells, her body had no defense mechanism left.

Mara stood in the waiting corridor with Bree. The two women, once separated by betrayal, deceit, and years of silent bitterness, sat side by side on a vinyl couch, watching the digital status board update every fifteen minutes.

"I never got to properly apologize to you, Mara," Bree said softly, staring down at her coffee cup. "Back then... when Tobin brought me into your house... I was twenty-five, terrified, and so gullible. He told me you two were roommates who stayed together for taxes. He made me feel like I was saving him."

"Tobin has a talent for making women feel responsible for fixing his life," Mara replied quietly. She looked at Bree’s tired eyes. "You didn't ruin my marriage, Bree. Tobin’s emptiness did that. But you raised a good boy. Ronan has a heart that didn't come from his father."

Bree smiled weakly. "He idolizes Keely. Every time she won an award in the local paper, I made sure to cut it out and put it in his memory book. I wanted him to know his sister was incredible, even if we couldn't be a normal family."

At 11:30 AM, Dr. Arisaka emerged through the double doors of the surgical suite carrying a clear plastic bag filled with rich, crimson fluid—the harvested marrow containing billions of Ronan’s healthy hematopoietic stem cells.

"The harvest went flawlessly," Dr. Arisaka announced. "Ronan responded exceptionally well. We obtained a high cell yield with minimal blood loss. He is waking up in recovery right now and asking for ice pops."

Mara covered her face with her hands, breathing a deep sigh of relief. "And Keely?"

"We begin infusion immediately," Dr. Arisaka said, moving toward the isolation unit. "This is day zero."
