Chapter 9 - The Memorial at the Lake

Six months later. On a bright, warm Saturday afternoon in May.
The sun glittered across the calm blue waters of the Ozarks lake. The trees were vibrant green, filled with the sweet songs of morning birds.
A small group gathered on the wooden dock near the cabin—my mother, Rachel, Agent Vance, Dr. Harris, and Nurse Carter, who had become a dear family friend following that terrifying night at St. Mary's.
I stood at the end of the dock, wearing a white summer dress. In my arms, I held Addison, who was now a bubbly, nine-month-old baby girl with soft dark curls and brilliant green eyes—Ethan’s exact eyes.
A beautiful granite bench had been installed at the edge of the water, carved with the words:
ETHAN MILLER A Loving Husband, Father, and Gentle Soul. His Love Lives On in the Heart of His Daughter.
I walked over to the bench, setting a wreath of white lilies and yellow roses on the smooth stone.
I looked out at the peaceful water, feeling a gentle, warm breeze blow through my hair—a wind that carried no ice, no terror, and no fear.
"We buried the monster, Ethan," I whispered into the breeze, leaning down to let Addison touch the carved letters on the bench. "Your name is clear. Everyone knows the truth now. Everyone knows how much you loved us."
Addison let out a happy giggle, reaching her tiny hand toward the sunlight reflecting off the water, babbling softly.

My mother walked up behind me, placing a loving hand on my shoulder. "He’s here, Sarah. He’s watching her."
"I know," I smiled, wiping a single, happy tear from my cheek. "I can feel him."
