Chapter 2 - The Double Life

Within twenty minutes, St. Mary’s was swarming with federal agents and local homicide detectives.

Lead Special Agent Marcus Vance of the FBI’s Field Office in St. Louis walked into my room, his expression somber and focused. He pulled up a chair beside my bed, where I was frantically trying to nurse Addison, my hands trembling so violently that my mother had to help support her head.

"Mrs. Miller," Agent Vance began, his voice surprisingly soft. "I know you have just been through a traumatic medical event, but we need to ask you questions immediately. The man you knew as Ethan Miller has escaped the building through a service exit. We have set up a perimeter, but we need to know who we are actually hunting."

"I don't know," I sobbed, pressing my face into Addison's soft blanket. "I thought he was my husband! We've been married for four years! We dated for two years before that!"

"Agent Vance," my sister Rachel interjected, stepping forward with her phone out. "Look at this. I pulled up our wedding photos from four years ago."

Agent Vance took the phone, zooming in on the groom standing beside me at the altar. He pulled out his own tablet, comparing the wedding photo to a mugshot pulled from a federal database.

"Jesus Christ," Vance muttered under his breath.

"What is it?" my mother demanded. "Tell us!"

Agent Vance turned the tablet toward us. "The man you married four years ago was the real Ethan Miller. But the man who was in this room an hour ago is not him."

He tapped a file on the screen. A face appeared—identical in structure, height, and bone features to my husband, but with a jagged scar running along his collarbone that the man in my hospital room did not have.

"This is Julian Miller," Agent Vance explained. "Ethan Miller’s estranged twin brother. Julian was believed to have died six years ago in a boating accident off the coast of Miami, following his conviction for high-level corporate fraud and identity theft."

My mind spun out of control. "A twin? Ethan... Ethan told me his twin died in college! He said he never wanted to talk about him!"

"Ethan wasn't lying to you about Julian being dead—he truly believed it," Vance said. "Julian faked his death to avoid a twenty-year federal prison sentence. He went dark, living under false identities across South America. But six months ago, something happened."

Agent Vance pulled out a printout of bank transactions.

"Six months ago, the real Ethan Miller accessed a trust fund left by his late grandfather, worth roughly 4.2 million dollars. Three weeks after that money was cleared, Ethan's behavior began to change, didn't it, Mrs. Miller?"

I buried my face in my hands as the horrific pieces of the puzzle began to slam into place. Six months ago, Ethan went on a weekend fishing trip to the Ozarks alone. He came back late on a Sunday night. He seemed quieter, more distant. He wore long sleeves even in the summer heat. He said he had lost his wedding ring in the lake and needed to buy a replacement.

It wasn't my husband who came home from that trip. It was his monster of a brother.

"Where is Ethan?" I choked out, a wave of sickening dread overwhelming me. "Where is my husband?!"

Agent Vance looked down at the floor, unable to meet my eyes. "We have dispatched a team to the Ozarks cabin. But Mrs. Miller... given Julian's criminal history and the fact that he successfully assumed Ethan's life, his job, and his home for six months... we have to prepare for the worst."

I let out a blood-curdling scream that echoed through the maternity ward, pulling my tiny baby close as the reality of my life collapsed into a terrifying abyss.
