Chapter 6 - The Shattered Mirror

Two weeks into the thirty-day eviction window, the cracks inside the Sterling family broke wide open.

Caroline stood in the middle of her small, two-bedroom apartment in South Boston. The space was clutter-filled, smelling of cheap takeout and stale laundry—a far cry from the waterfront penthouse her mother had promised she would be living in after marrying into the Miller family.

Julian sat at the small kitchen table, working through a massive pile of financial invoices with his father’s accountant.

"I don't understand!" Caroline shouted, throwing her hands in the air. "Why can't your dad just give us the down payment for the condo in Back Bay?! He promised us that money as a wedding gift!"

Julian looked up from the papers, his eyes dark with exhaustion and anger.

"He promised us that money under the condition that your family was bringing an equal contribution to the marriage, Caroline!" Julian snapped. "Instead, your father owes three hundred thousand dollars to bank creditors, your mother is facing a criminal fraud inquiry, and your sister owns the house your parents are currently sleeping in!"

"Emily is doing this out of spite!" Caroline yelled, her voice shrill. "She’s jealous! She’s always been jealous of me because Mom and Dad loved me more!"

Julian stopped writing. He set his pen down slowly, stood up, and walked over to stand inches from his wife.

"Do you really believe that?" Julian asked, his tone dropping into a terrifyingly quiet register.

"Yes!" Caroline insisted.

"Caroline," Julian said softly, looking at her as if seeing her for the first time. "Your sister moved to Asia when she was twenty-two. She built a multi-million-dollar financial advisory firm from scratch. She earns more in three months than I make in two years."

He shook his head, a look of profound disappointment filling his face.

"She didn't come to our wedding to steal your spotlight," Julian continued. "She came because she loved you. And when my father offered to pay her back for the deposit she put on your dress, do you know what she said?"

Caroline blinked, caught off guard. "What?"

"She told my father to keep the money," Julian revealed. "She said the dress was her final gift to you, and that she wanted nothing back from this family ever again."

Caroline froze. The blood drained slowly from her face.

"She... she didn't take the money back for the dress?" Caroline whispered.

"No," Julian said. "She released the lien on your dress and the florist bill. She only pursued the charges your mother fraudulently racked up after she was thrown out of the building."

Julian pulled his wedding ring off his finger and set it quietly on the kitchen counter.

"My father gave me a choice this morning, Caroline," Julian said quietly. "He said I could stay married to a woman who refuses to take responsibility for her family's cruelty, or I could move back home, take a entry-level job at his warehouse, and learn how to be a real man."

Caroline gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "Julian... no! You can't leave me!"

"I'm going to my parents' house for a few weeks," Julian said, picking up his duffel bag from near the door. "If you want this marriage to survive, Caroline, you need to walk to your sister's office, get on your knees, and figure out how to become a human being."

The door clicked shut behind him, leaving Caroline standing alone in the quiet apartment.
