Chapter 2 - The Echo in Boston

Three thousand miles away, inside the sun-drenched, high-ceilinged parlor of the suite at the Boston Harbor Grand Hotel, the air felt like thick, suffocating smoke.

Eleanor stood near the marble fireplace, her silver mother-of-the-bride dress still hanging on the closet door behind her, wrinkled and forgotten. She held her phone against her ear with a hand that trembled so violently her diamond ring clicked against the glass screen.

"What do you mean, 'declined'?" Eleanor hissed into the receiver, her voice rising to a shrill, hysterical pitch. "Try it again! It's an unlimited platinum line!"

"Ma'am," the icy, professional voice of the hotel's senior finance director replied over the speakerphone, "we have attempted to process the remaining balance of thirty-eight thousand four hundred dollars three times. The banking network has returned a Code 208—Fraud Investigation Hold. The primary cardholder has officially reported all authorization keys stolen."

Richard sat on the edge of the plush sofa, his face gray, his head buried in his hands. "Eleanor... tell me you didn't put the final venue balance on Emily's corporate card."

"She said she was paying for the wedding!" Eleanor snapped, spinning around to glare at her husband. "She told us six months ago she would cover Caroline's big day!"

"She said she would help!" Caroline wailed from the adjoining bedroom.

The bride walked out, wearing an oversized hoodie over her silk pajama pants, her eyes swollen and red from three days of non-stop crying.

"She paid the deposit, Mom!" Caroline cried out, her voice cracking. "She paid the florist! You told me you and Dad had the final venue payment covered from your retirement account!"

Richard pulled his hands away from his face, revealing hollow, terrified eyes. "The retirement account was liquidated eight months ago, Caroline. To pay off the second mortgage on the house."

The room went dead silent.

Caroline stared at her father as if he were a stranger. "What?"

"We didn't have thirty-eight thousand dollars," Richard admitted, his voice barely a whisper. "Your mother told the venue manager to keep Emily's card details on file for the final settlement after the reception ended. We assumed... we assumed Emily would just absorb it once the weekend was over. She always absorbs it!"

"Well, she didn't absorb it!" Caroline screamed, her hands clutching her hair. "She locked the card! And now Julian’s parents are downstairs in the lobby waiting to check out, and the hotel manager won't release our luggage until the bill is cleared!"

Julian—Caroline’s brand-new husband—walked into the suite from the hallway, holding a sheet of paper. His face was rigid, his jaw set in an angry, defensive line.

"My father just called me from the front desk," Julian said coldly, looking directly at Eleanor. "He tried to check out our bridal suite. The manager informed him that the entire wedding party's room block has been frozen under a master liability lien because the primary event bill bounced."

"Julian, sweetie, it's just a temporary bank glitch—" Eleanor began, stepping forward with a forced, placating smile.

"Don't 'sweetie' me, Eleanor," Julian interrupted, his voice dropping into an ominous tone. "My family paid fifty thousand dollars for the rehearsal dinner and the honeymoon flights to Italy. We were told your family had the venue fully covered. My father is currently being questioned in the lobby by hotel security because the hotel thinks we orchestrated a corporate payment scam!"

He looked at Caroline, his eyes cold and unfeeling.

"Your sister flew eighteen hours from Asia to be here," Julian said softly, the weight of the realization sinking in. "And you threw her out on the sidewalk because your mother was embarrassed that Emily would find out you were using her money to pretend you were rich."

May you like

"That's not true!" Caroline sobbed.

"Then call her," Julian commanded, pointing at Caroline's phone. "Call Emily right now, put her on speaker, and apologize. Because if my family's name gets dragged through a corporate fraud investigation over your mother's vanity, this marriage is going to be annulled before the weekend is over."
