Chapter 6 - The Collapse on the Dais

The chamber erupted into absolute bedlam.

Reporters leaped from their seats, thrusting long microphones over the wooden railing. Flashbulbs flashed continuously, illuminating the absolute panic on Brandon Whitfield’s face.

"Lies!" Brandon screamed, his voice cracking painfully through the sound system. "This is a malicious, fabricated attack by a disgruntled corporate donor! I demand this meeting be adjourned immediately!"

He turned to the committee chairman sitting beside him—an elderly senator named Arthur Vance—begging him with his eyes to shut down the hearing.

Senator Vance did not touch his gavel. He slowly put on his reading glasses, leaned over, and looked down at the certified bank statements and wire receipts that my legal team had already distributed to every member of the committee thirty seconds before I walked into the room.

Senator Vance looked at the paper, then looked up at Brandon with deep, unmitigated disgust.

"Senator Whitfield," Vance said, his voice cold and dry into his microphone. "Sit down."

"Arthur, this is a trap—"

"I said sit down, Brandon," Vance repeated, his tone leaving zero room for negotiation.

Brandon slowly collapsed back into his leather executive chair. His pristine hair was disheveled; his tie was slightly askew; his forehead was covered in a heavy sheen of sweat.

I picked up my binder, stood up from the witness table, and looked at him from the center of the floor.

"Fifteen years ago, Brandon," I said, keeping my voice low enough for the microphones to catch every word, "you told me that girls like me were meant to be forgotten while men like you made history."

The entire room went quiet, hanging on every word.

"You were right about one thing," I continued. "You are going to make history today. But not the kind you can buy with a Tom Ford suit."

Two men in dark suits stepped through the side doors of the Senate committee room. They were not Statehouse security guards.

They were Special Agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, accompanied by the Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio.

The lead agent walked straight up to the committee dais, unholstered a pair of steel handcuffs, and held them up in full view of forty television cameras.

"Brandon Whitfield," the federal agent announced clearly. "You are under arrest for Federal Wire Fraud, Theft of Government Property, and Obstruction of Justice."

Brandon looked at the handcuffs, then at the cameras, then at the public gallery where Daniel stood holding our son.

Daniel didn't gloat. He didn't smile. He simply stood there, an unyielding tower of quiet strength, looking down at the man who had tried to humiliate his wife.

As the federal agents clicked the steel cuffs around Brandon’s wrists and led him out of the chamber—his campaign pin falling off his lapel and landing on the carpeted floor—not a single person in the room moved to help him.

The golden boy of Riverside High had finally been exposed for what he had always been: a hollow shell built on stolen ground.
