Chapter 9 - The House on Maple Street

In June, two months before Junia’s ninth birthday, we moved into our new home.

It wasn't a twelve-foot mansion like Georgette’s old house. It was a charming, two-story craftsman house on Maple Street, with a yellow front door, a wide porch swing, and a big backyard filled with oak trees and blooming hydrangeas.

We bought it outright—no mortgage, no debt, no fear.

On moving day, Junia ran up the stairs to her new bedroom. It had a big bay window overlooking the garden, a real hardwood desk for her homework, and a soft queen-sized bed covered in yellow floral sheets.

I walked into her room, holding two boxes of her books.

Junia was standing near the window, holding her small wooden desk clock—the one she had kept in her tiny, cold bedroom on Telford Street.

"Mom?" she asked, turning to look at me.

"Yes, sweetie?"

"Is this house really ours?" she asked, her voice filled with quiet wonder. "Like... we don't have to move if the landlord raises the rent?"

I set the boxes down, walked over to her, and knelt beside her on the soft rug. I pulled her into my arms, holding her close against my heart.

"It’s ours forever, Junia," I whispered into her hair. "Nobody can ever take it from us. Your granddad Arthur bought this house for us. He made sure we were safe."

Junia smiled—a radiant, bright, beautiful smile that warmed every corner of my soul. She wrapped her arms tightly around my neck.

"I love it, Mom," she whispered. "It smells like sunshine."

That evening, we sat on the front porch swing, watching the fireflies dance across the green lawn as the sun set behind the maple trees. We ate fresh strawberries and vanilla ice cream, listening to the soft rustle of the evening breeze.

For six years, I had lived in constant survival mode—fighting every hour of every day just to keep a roof over our heads.

Now, sitting on our porch, holding my daughter's hand, I felt something I hadn't felt since my father passed away:

Peace.
