Chapter 5 - The Raid on G-Style

At 9:15 AM on Saturday morning, the upscale shopping district of North Oakwood was rocked by the sound of wailing police sirens.

Three unmarked black sedans and a forensic mobile unit pulled up directly outside the pristine glass doors of G-Style Boutique.

I stood across the street on the sidewalk, wrapped in a warm coat, watching beside Tabitha Reyes.

Inside the store, Georgette was hosting an exclusive VIP morning trunk show for wealthy socialites. Through the massive glass windows, we could see women sipping mimosas and browsing racks of $3,000 silk dresses.

Suddenly, Detective Marcus Vance and six uniformed officers stepped through the front entrance.

The music inside the store cut out instantly.

Georgette dropped her clipboard, her hands flying to her mouth as Detective Vance held up a federal search warrant signed by a state judge.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Georgette’s scream carried faintly through the glass doors out to the street. "This is a private luxury establishment! Get your officers out of here!"

Julian Vane rushed out from his back office, his face pale, holding a stack of financial folders.

"Officer, there must be a mistake—" Julian started, but Detective Vance stepped directly into his path, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs.

"Julian Vane," Detective Vance announced clearly. "You are under arrest for witness tampering, attempted extortion, and obstruction of justice in connection with the Arthur Whitlock Trust investigation."

SNAP.

The steel cuffs clicked around Julian’s wrists in front of all fifteen wealthy socialites.

Georgette let out an ear-piercing shriek, clutching her head as two female officers blocked her from touching her husband. "Julian! Julian, do something!"

"Keep your hands where we can see them, Mrs. Vane!" an officer commanded.

Federal forensic agents immediately began seizing computer towers, hard drives, and legal file cabinets from the back office. Black evidence bags were carried out through the front doors, loaded into the back of the police vans in broad daylight.

Curious onlookers gathered on the sidewalk, pulling out their smartphones and recording video of the city’s most arrogant socialite watching her husband get dragged into the back of a police cruiser in chains.

Georgette stumbled out onto the sidewalk, her hair disheveled, her expensive makeup ruined by frantic tears.

She saw me standing across the street.

Her eyes turned wild with desperate, psychotic fury. She ran across the four-lane street, ignoring honking cars, stopping five feet from me.

"YOU DID THIS!" Georgette screamed, her voice cracking with hysterical rage. "You bitter, jealous witch! You ruined my store! You ruined my husband! All because of a stupid eighteen-dollar Christmas gift!"

May you like

I didn't step back. I didn't blink. I looked at my sister—the woman who had spent seven years watching my child freeze while she lived like royalty.

"No, Georgette," I said, my voice as calm as a frozen lake. "You did this to yourself the day you decided my daughter’s life was worth less than your vanity."
