Chapter 9 - THE MOTHER'S RECKONING

Time seemed to slow down into absolute, razor-sharp clarity.

I didn't feel the pain from the wound on my head. I didn't feel the freezing wind blowing through the shattered back door. Every cell in my body, every ounce of love, grief, and maternal fury that had built up inside my soul for seven hundred days condensed into a single, unstoppable force.

I reached out with my right hand, my fingers wrapping tightly around the thick handle of the hunting knife tucked into my belt.

With a primal, earth-shattering scream, I lunged forward from the floor, thrusting the seven-inch steel blade upward with everything I had left.

The blade sank deep into the side of Victor’s right knee joint, severing the tendon.

Victor let out an agonizing, guttural roar of pain as his leg buckled beneath him. He collapsed sideways onto the floorboards, his pistol clattering out of his gloved hand and rolling toward the hearth.

Before he could recover, Lily swung the heavy iron fireplace poker with all her strength, striking Victor across the side of his scarred jaw with a sharp metallic CLANG.

Victor groaned, his head snapping back as blood spattered across the rag rug.

I scrambled over his massive body, grabbed the fallen suppressed pistol from the hearth stones, and pressed the cold steel barrel directly against his forehead.

"MOVE AND YOU DIE!" I roared, my eyes wild, my body covered in blood, my breathing coming in ragged, ferocious gasps.

Victor went completely still. The arrogant, ruthless killer was gone. Staring up into the barrel of the gun, looking into my eyes, he saw a mother who had returned from the depths of hell to protect her child. For the first time, sheer, unadulterated terror filled his eyes.

"Please..." Victor wheezed, holding his hands up in defeat. "Don't..."

"Lily," I said, my voice ice-cold, never taking my eyes off Victor’s face. "Get Detective Vance’s handcuffs from her belt."

Lily ran to the kitchen floor where Detective Vance was groaning, retrieved the heavy steel handcuffs, and sprinted back to my side.

"Keep the gun on him, Mom," Lily said, her voice remarkably steady despite her trembling body.

I kept the pistol pressed against his forehead while Lily quickly and expertly bound Victor’s wrists behind his back, clicking the steel cuffs tight around his wrists.

Once he was secured, I backed away slowly, lowering the firearm, and collapsed onto my knees beside Vance.

"Vance... stay with me," I pleaded, pressing a heavy wool towel against her shoulder wound to stop the bleeding.

Vance opened her eyes slowly, coughing faintly, a weak smile touching her blood-stained lips. "You... you shot him, Sarah?"

"I stabbed him in the knee," I smiled through my tears. "And Lily hit him with a fireplace poker."

Vance let out a quiet, raspy laugh. "Good girl, Lily... damn good girl..."

I pulled Lily into my arms, hugging her tightly against my chest as the storm raged outside the cabin windows.

We were bruised. We were bleeding. We were stranded in three feet of snow in the deep wilderness of the Upper Peninsula.

But we were alive. And the monsters were finally, irrevocably defeated.
