Chapter 8 - NIGHT OF THE BLIZZARD

By 8:00 PM, the storm outside had escalated into a howling, whiteout fury.

The wind roared through the surrounding pine forest like an roaring freight train, shaking the heavy log beams of the cabin. Snow drifted five feet high against the northern side of the building, completely blocking the lower porch windows.

Inside, the living room was warm and quiet, lit only by the golden embers of the dying fireplace and three flickering oil lanterns set on the mantelpiece.

Lily was fast asleep on the sofa, wrapped in two heavy wool quilts, her chest rising and falling in a deep, restful rhythm.

Detective Vance sat at the kitchen table, cleaning her service pistol, while I sat near the hearth, sharpening a long hunting knife I had found in my father’s workbench drawer.

Suddenly, a loud, metallic THUD echoed from the back utility porch.

Vance snapped her head up, her hands instantly assembling her firearm with lightning speed. "What was that?"

"Probably a falling branch," I whispered, standing up and tucking the hunting knife into my belt. "The wind is tearing limbs off the pines out there."

"Stay here," Vance ordered in a low, authoritative command, stepping quietly toward the kitchen back door with her pistol held at the ready position.

She reached the heavy wooden back door, unlocked the deadbolt, and cracked it open two inches to peer out onto the enclosed utility porch.

Before she could react, the door was slammed inward with terrifying, bone-crushing violence.

The wood shattered with a deafening CRACK, striking Vance squarely in the face. She let out a choked gasp, staggering backward across the kitchen floor as blood erupted from her broken nose.

A massive, shadowy figure stepped through the ruined doorway—covered in snow, wearing a heavy tactical parka, his face scarred and twisted into a grotesque, triumphant sneer.

Victor Higgins.

"EVENING, LADIES!" Victor roared over the sound of the howling wind, holding a heavy, suppressed automatic pistol in his gloved right hand.

"VANCE!" I screamed, pulling my 9mm pistol from my jacket.

Before I could raise my weapon, Victor fired twice.

The silenced gun let out two soft, metallic THWIP-THWIP sounds.

Detective Vance collapsed onto the kitchen hardwood floor with a heavy groan, clutching her blood-soaked shoulder, her weapon sliding across the floor beneath the dining table.

Lily woke up with a blood-curdling shriek, leaping off the sofa in absolute terror. "MOMMY!"

"GET BEHIND ME, LILY!" I screamed, raising my handgun and pulling the trigger.

BANG!

The gunshot echoed like dynamite inside the small cabin. The bullet tore through the shoulder of Victor’s tactical parka, causing him to grunt in pain and stagger back against the door frame.

I aimed for his chest to fire a second shot, but Victor charged forward like a wounded bear, his massive body slamming into me before I could squeeze the trigger.

The force of the impact threw me across the room. My head struck the sharp corner of the stone fireplace hearth with blinding force. Black spots exploded across my vision as my pistol flew out of my hand, skidding into the dark corner near the firewood rack.

I fell to my knees, blood dripping down the side of my face, my vision spinning violently as I tried to stand up.

Victor stood over me, panting heavily, blood dripping from his wounded shoulder onto the hardwood floorboards. He looked over toward the corner where eleven-year-old Lily was cowering against the wall, clutching a heavy iron fireplace poker in her small, trembling hands.

"Well, well," Victor sneered, grinning through his dark beard as he took a slow step toward my daughter. "Look at you, little ghost. You caused a lot of trouble running away from that cabin."

"Don't touch her!" I gasped, coughing up blood as I dragged myself across the floor toward his feet. "Take me! Kill me! LEAVE MY DAUGHTER ALONE!"

May you like

Victor didn't even look down at me. He raised his suppressed pistol, aiming it directly at Lily’s forehead.

"End of the line, kid," Victor growled.
