Chapter 6 - The Betrayal Unmasked

The discovery of the hidden video sent shockwaves through the prosecution’s office. But Detective Vance wasn't finished. He knew that for fifteen years of abuse to go unnoticed, someone else had to be actively facilitating the crime.
He summoned my mother, Helen Bennett, to the police station for an official interrogation.
Sitting in a cold, stark room across from Vance and Dr. Reed, my mother looked small, nervous, and defensive.
“Mrs. Bennett,” Vance began, placing a thick file on the metal table between them. “We have recovered the security footage from the staircase. We know beyond a shadow of a doubt that Madison pushed Emily.”
Helen swallowed hard, her fingers clutching her designer handbag tightly. “I... I didn’t see the push. I was in the dining room.”
“You might not have seen the push that night,” Vance said, leaning forward. “But let's talk about the last fifteen years. Let's talk about why you allowed your sister and niece to abuse your daughter.”
“I never allowed anyone to abuse Emily!” Helen cried, her voice cracking. “I am her mother!”
“Then explain this,” Dr. Reed said, opening a financial ledger. “Over the past ten years, Aunt Patricia’s shell corporation transferred over four million dollars into a private offshore bank account in the Cayman Islands registered under your name.”
Helen’s breath caught in her throat. Her eyes darted toward the door, searching for an escape that didn't exist.
“We tracked the payments,” Dr. Reed continued pitilessly. “Every time Emily was admitted to an emergency room with a broken bone or severe injury, a payment of fifty to one hundred thousand dollars was deposited into your account within seventy-two hours.”
Tears began to streak down Helen’s heavy makeup, but they were not tears of remorse—they were tears of panic.
“You sold your own daughter’s safety,” Vance said, his voice laced with pure disgust. “Patricia paid you a monthly allowance and bonuses every time you helped cover up an 'accident'—all to ensure that Emily stayed dependent, quiet, and convinced she was crazy, so Patricia could maintain control of the thirty-million-dollar trust.”
“You don’t understand!” Helen sobbed, placing her head in her hands. “When my husband died, we had nothing! Patricia controlled the money! She told me that if I didn’t play along, she would cut me off completely and leave us on the street! I did it to keep a roof over our heads!”

“You sacrificed your child’s body and soul for luxury cars, expensive dresses, and a mansion in Lake Forest,” Vance replied coldly. “Helen Bennett, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit attempted murder, child endangerment, grand larceny, and corporate fraud.”
As the officers cuffed my mother and led her away, she screamed for her lawyer. But no amount of money or high-society influence could erase the cold hard paper trail of her betrayal.
