Chapter 5 - The Confrontation at the Mansion

armed with a search warrant signed by a Cook County judge, Detective Vance and a squad of forensic officers descended upon the Vance estate in Lake Forest.

Aunt Patricia met them at the grand front entrance, her lawyer standing beside her.

“This is an unlawful invasion!” Patricia shouted, her voice echoing off the high ceilings of the foyer. “You have no right to tear apart my home over the delusions of a mentally sick girl!”

“We have a signed warrant to search the premises, analyze all digital security systems, and secure any evidence related to the attempted murder of Emily Bennett,” Detective Vance replied calmly, stepping past her.

While forensic technicians began taking measurements of the staircase and analyzing the impact marks on the wooden banister, a specialized digital forensics officer made a crucial discovery in the basement server room.

“Detective!” the technician called out. “You need to see this.”

Vance descended into the basement. The technician pointed to a dusty, hidden rack server tucked away behind a wooden wall panel.

“What is that?” Vance asked.

“It’s a secondary, closed-circuit security system,” the technician explained, tapping quickly on his laptop. “The main house cameras were turned off during the party—which Patricia claimed was for 'privacy.' But this secondary system was installed by the house’s original security contractor eight years ago. It’s hardwired into hidden motion-sensor cameras in the common areas—including the second-floor landing.”

Detective Vance’s eyes narrowed. “Is the footage intact?”

“It’s stored on a local, encrypted hard drive that hasn’t been wiped,” the technician smiled grimly. “I’m pulling up the timestamp from the night of the engagement party right now.”

On the technician’s screen, a crisp, high-definition video began to play.

The second-floor landing was clearly visible. Emily was standing near the edge, holding a glass of sparkling water, looking down at the guests below.

From around the corner, Madison appeared. Her face was dark, cold, and calculated. She walked up behind Emily with light, deliberate steps.

There was no trip. There was no stumble.

Madison placed both hands firmly against Emily’s shoulders and delivered a powerful, intentional shove.

The camera caught the terror on Emily’s face as she fell backward. It caught Madison stepping up to the banister, leaning over, and bursting into a broad, triumphant smile.

And then, audio recorded from the ceiling microphone picked up Madison’s clear, chilling voice:

“Careful, Emily... You’re always so clumsy.”

Detective Vance slammed his notebook shut. “Get the prosecutor on the line. We don’t just have a assault case anymore. We have premeditated attempted murder on video.”
