Chapter 2 - The Silent Vow

The Saturday of my wedding arrived under a brilliant, clear sky in Lake Oswego.

There was no chaos in the bridal suite. No passive-aggressive comments about my dress, my hair, or the cost of the centerpieces. Robert and Helen Cole had transformed their spacious backyard into an elegant, intimate garden setting filled with white roses and soft golden sunlight.

When I stepped into my dress, Helen helped me zip it up with tears in her eyes.

"You look stunning, Athena," she whispered, gently adjusting my simple veil. "We are so honored to welcome you into our family."

For a second, my chest tightened. The phantom limb of my biological family's absence tried to ache, but Helen's genuine warmth replaced the sting with a deep, grounding warmth.

When I walked down the aisle toward Marcus, he didn't just smile—his eyes welled with tears. He stood beside his father, who served as his best man, looking at me as if I were the only person in the universe.

There were forty guests. Friends who had stood by me during six-a.m. bakery shifts, Marcus’s loving extended family, and my old mentor from culinary school.

No Gerald Wells.

No Diane Wells.

No Clarissa.

During the toasts, Marcus raised his glass, looking at me with fierce, unwavering pride.

"Athena is the strongest, most brilliant woman I have ever known," he said into the microphone, his voice steady and full. "She has spent her life building warmth for others, often while freezing in the cold herself. Today, I promise to spend the rest of my life making sure she never feels cold again."

As the applause filled the night air under fairy lights, I knew two things with absolute certainty:

May you like

First, I had married my true partner.

Second, the bank of Athena Wells was officially, permanently closed.
