Chapter 7 - The New Studio

Six months after the collapse of Morgan Estate Management, the sun shone brightly over a sleek, modern brick building in downtown Chicago.

Above the entrance, brushed steel letters read: VANCE & MORGAN COMMERCIAL PARTNERS.

Inside, the atmosphere was completely different from the cold, intimidating hallways of the old family firm. Sunlight streamed through floor-to-ceiling windows, green plants lined the open-concept desks, and laughter echoed from the breakroom.

Calder’s new firm had taken the market by storm. Within half a year, they had secured seventy percent of the regional commercial leases, employing over forty people, including several former lower-level staff from Morgan Estate whom Calder had rescued from unemployment.

On the ground floor of the building was a bright, spacious room with a separate entrance.

The sign beside the glass door read: WREN’S CORNER: COMMUNITY YOUTH BAKER’S STUDIO.

It was a non-profit culinary arts space fully funded by Vance & Morgan, dedicated to providing free baking and pastry classes for teenage girls from low-income families, teaching them confidence, skill, and creative expression.

On opening day, the studio was filled with balloons, flour-dusted aprons, and the warm, rich smell of baking vanilla.

Wren, now fifteen, stood near the central stainless-steel island wearing a chef’s coat with her name embroidered on the pocket in soft pink thread. She was guiding a group of six younger girls, showing them how to hold a piping bag to make clean, beautiful frosting stars.

Her confidence had transformed. The shy, hesitant girl who had trembled in Bexley’s dining room had grown into a poised, radiant young woman who knew her worth.

I stood near the door, leaning against Calder’s shoulder as we watched her work.

"She looks happy," I murmured, pressing a kiss to Calder’s cheek.

"She is happy," Calder smiled, wrapping his arm around my waist. "Because she knows nobody can ever throw her hard work away again."

A soft chime sounded at the front door of the studio.

We both looked over.

Standing near the threshold was Talia.
