Chapter 10 - The Sacred Cake

Later that evening, after the sun had set and the paper lanterns cast a warm, golden glow across the lawn, the crowd gathered around the main dessert table.
It was time for the final surprise of the night.
Wren walked out of our kitchen doors carrying a large, two-tiered cake on a silver platter.
It was breathtaking.
The base tier was wrapped in flawless white buttercream, decorated with delicate, hand-piped sugar flowers that looked so real they seemed to catch the evening breeze. The top tier was a soft, glowing shade of pink, crowned with glossy fresh strawberries dipped in edible gold leaf.
Across the front of the top tier, written in immaculate, flowing cursive script, were three simple words:
FAVORITE FAMILY.
The crowd applauded wildly, taking photos, admiring the incredible artistry of a fifteen-year-old girl who had turned her pain into mastery.
Wren set the silver platter down in the center of the main table.
Calder walked over, looking down at the cake, then looking up at his daughter.
"It's beautiful, sweetheart," Calder whispered, pulling her into a tight, warm hug. "The most beautiful thing I've ever seen."
"Cut it, Dad," Wren smiled, handing him the silver cake server. "This one isn't for pictures. It's for eating."
Calder took the server. He cut the very first slice—a deep, generous piece filled with fresh vanilla bean cake and rich strawberry filling—and placed it onto a china plate.
He didn't serve himself first. He didn't serve Marcus Vance or his business partners.
Calder turned around and handed the very first plate to our daughter.
"To my favorite baker," Calder said softly.
Wren took the plate, took a bite, and closed her eyes with a pure, radiant smile that lit up the entire garden.
As I stood beside my husband, watching our daughter laugh with her friends under the glowing lanterns, I felt a deep, unbreakable peace wash over my soul.

The old cake had been thrown into the trash, crushed beneath the weight of bitter, arrogant people.
But from those ashes, we had built a life that was strong, true, and completely unshakeable. A life where love was never thrown away, where hard work was always honored, and where every single day was celebrated like something truly sacred.
