Chapter 9 - The Truth Beneath the Ice

By midnight, the gala had concluded, and the storm of publicity had reached a fever pitch. But inside Adrian’s penthouse apartment in Tribeca, everything was quiet.

Mia was fast asleep in the guest room, wrapped in a fluffy blanket with Gerald the elephant tucked beside her.

I walked out onto the private terrace overlooking the Hudson River, wrapped in a soft cashmere sweater Adrian had given me over my dress. The cool night air felt soothing against my warm skin.

The glass door slid open, and Adrian walked out, holding two mugs of hot tea. He handed one to me and leaned against the balcony railing, looking out at the glittering water.

“Your mother left for Palm Beach an hour ago,” I said softly, looking at him. “She called me before she left. She said… she said she misjudged me.”

Adrian let out a quiet chuckle. “My mother respects strength above all else, Elena. Tonight, she saw you stand your ground against a monster. She won't bother you again.”

We fell into a comfortable silence. The city hummed below us, a distant carpet of light and energy.

I looked down at the massive diamond ring still resting on my finger.

“The news reports say the divorce decree was granted by the judge an hour ago,” I murmured. “And Gregory’s legal team has surrendered all claims to custody. It’s over, Adrian. I’m completely free.”

Adrian didn't answer right away. He set his mug down on the glass table and turned to face me.

“So,” I continued, forcing a soft, bitter-sweet smile as I reached up to slide the ring off my finger. “I suppose our fake engagement has served its purpose. I can’t thank you enough for everything you’ve done for Mia and me—”

Adrian reached out and gently covered my hand, stopping me from removing the ring.

His touch was warm, firm, and uncompromising.

“Don't take it off,” Adrian said softly.

I looked up into his gray-blue eyes, my heart skipping a chaotic beat. “Adrian… the legal battle is over. You don't have to pretend anymore.”

“Do you really think I spent a billion dollars, fought my own board of directors, and took on your ex-husband because of a corporate legal strategy, Elena?” Adrian asked, his voice dropping into a rough, passionate whisper.

My breath hitched. “What are you saying?”

“I’m saying that for two years, I sat across from you in boardrooms, watching you work with brilliant, fiery grace,” Adrian murmured, taking a step closer, closing the distance between us until there was no space left at all. “I watched you carry the weight of the world on your shoulders, too proud and too brave to ask for help. And every single day, I fell deeper in love with you.”

Tears welled in my eyes—not tears of fear or sadness, but of overwhelming, uncontainable joy.

“You… you love me?” I whispered.

“I love you, Elena Vance,” Adrian said, his gray-blue eyes shining with an intensity that stripped away every defense I had left. “And if your daughter wants me to be her daddy… I would consider it the greatest honor of my life.”

He leaned down, and his lips met mine in a kiss that was warm, deep, and filled with two years of unspoken longing.
