Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage

The penthouse suite at The Plaza Hotel was larger than my entire apartment in Brooklyn. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a sweeping view of Central Park, glittering like a sea of diamonds beneath the night sky.

While Mia happily explored the massive marble bathroom with a room-service fruit platter, I stood by the fireplace, holding a glass of iced water that Adrian had handed me.

Adrian sat on the velvet sofa opposite me, his tie loosened, the top buttons of his shirt undone. The rigid, immaculate executive I had known for two years was gone; in his place was a man who looked intensely focused, almost lethal in his quiet determination.

“His name is Gregory Vance,” I began softly, staring down at my glass. “We were married for four years. At first, he was charming. But after Mia was born, he became controlling, paranoid, and financially reckless. He ran his family’s commercial firm into the ground, and when I refused to sign over my trust fund to cover his debts, he became… volatile.”

“Did he hit you?” Adrian asked quietly.

I shook my head. “He didn't have to. He used psychological warfare. He threatened to use his family’s corrupt political connections in Georgia to declare me an unfit mother and take Mia away. So I packed two suitcases, grabbed Mia while he was on a business trip, and ran to New York. I took the job at your firm under my maiden name’s initial, but I never legally finalized the divorce decree because I was terrified he would track me down through court filings.”

Adrian listened in absolute silence, his hands resting on his knees.

“You’ve been carrying this alone for two years?” he asked, his voice low and heavy.

“I had to,” I whispered, looking up at him. “Mia has no one else. I couldn't risk losing her.”

Adrian stood up and walked over to the window, staring out at the city light. “My father was a powerful man, Elena. He controlled everything—my career, my choices, my life. I watched my mother suffer in silence for twenty years because she thought she had no options. I swore I would never stand by and watch a woman be broken by a man who uses power as a weapon.”

He turned around to face me. The golden light from the chandelier caught the sharp angles of his face.

“Tomorrow morning, my personal attorney, Marcus Thorne, will file an expedited divorce petition in the state of New York, alongside an emergency restraining order,” Adrian said calmly. “We will also hire a private security detail to accompany you and Mia twenty-four hours a day.”

I gasped, shaking my head. “Mr. Kane… Adrian… I can’t accept this. The legal fees alone—I can’t afford to pay you back.”

Adrian took three slow steps toward me, stopping just inches away. I could feel the heat radiating from his body.

“I didn't offer to lend you money, Elena,” he said, his voice dropping to a warm, intimate murmur that sent a shiver down my spine. “I am offering to solve a problem. And as for your daughter’s request this morning…”

He reached out, his long fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from my cheek. His touch was so light, so exquisitely tender, that my breath caught in my throat.

“She suggested I should be her daddy,” Adrian whispered, his gray-blue eyes burning into mine. “Perhaps we should start by giving her a mother who doesn't have to cry in her closet anymore.”
