CHAPTER 3: THE FIRE HE WALKED THROUGH

The warehouse trembled under the force of the explosion.

Dust rained from the ceiling.

Metal beams groaned.

Somewhere outside, automatic gunfire erupted like thunder.

Emma's heart slammed against her ribs.

For one brief second, nobody moved.

Then chaos consumed everything.

Men shouted.

Weapons were drawn.

Security alarms screamed through the building.

Viktor Volkov's face hardened.

"Damn him."

Emma knew exactly who he meant.

Dante.

Only Dante could terrify a man like Viktor Volkov.

One of Volkov's guards rushed into the room.

"Boss! They're inside!"

Volkov remained strangely calm.

"How many?"

"We don't know."

The answer was enough.

Volkov smiled.

Not because he was happy.

Because he understood.

Dante had done something impossible.

Again.

The old Russian billionaire slowly looked toward Emma.

For several silent seconds he studied her face.

Then he laughed.

"You really are special."

Emma glared at him.

"Go to hell."

Volkov's smile widened.

"He crossed half the city with an army because of you."

Outside, another explosion rocked the building.

The lights flickered.

Emma's pulse accelerated.

Hope.

For the first time since being kidnapped, she felt hope.

Volkov noticed.

And that worried him.

"Interesting."

"What?"

The old man stepped closer.

"When did you start believing he'd come?"

Emma said nothing.

Because the truth frightened her.

She hadn't expected rescue.

Not really.

She had expected survival.

Maybe negotiation.

Maybe luck.

But not this.

Not a war.

Not a city burning because she disappeared.

Volkov's eyes narrowed.

And suddenly he understood.

The same realization struck them both at once.

Emma wasn't just important to Dante.

Dante wasn't just protecting Emma.

Something deeper existed.

Something neither had fully admitted.

The old man sighed.

"That's unfortunate."

Before Emma could respond, the warehouse doors exploded inward.

The blast shook the room.

Men screamed.

Gunfire erupted instantly.

Volkov's guards opened fire.

Bullets shredded walls.

Glass shattered.

Smoke filled the air.

Emma dropped to the floor.

The battle had arrived.

And at its center stood Dante Marchetti.

Covered in dust.

Dressed entirely in black.

A pistol in each hand.

His expression looked carved from stone.

For one terrifying moment he resembled death itself.

The room froze.

Even Volkov seemed impressed.

Then Dante's eyes found Emma.

Everything else disappeared.

The gunfire.

The explosions.

The chaos.

Nothing mattered.

Only her.

Emma had never seen anyone look at her that way.

As if her existence alone determined whether the world remained standing.

"Dante."

The word escaped before she realized it.

Something changed in his face.

A crack in the armor.

A glimpse of relief.

Then it vanished.

"Are you hurt?"

Even now.

Even here.

That was his first question.

Emma shook her head.

"No."

The tension in his shoulders eased.

Only slightly.

Then Dante turned toward Volkov.

And the room became cold.

Very cold.

The two men stared at each other.

Years of hatred hanging between them.

Volkov smiled.

"All this for a maid."

Dante said nothing.

"New York's great king reduced to a lovesick fool."

Still nothing.

Volkov chuckled.

"Your father would be disappointed."

The effect was immediate.

Every person in the room felt it.

The atmosphere changed.

Something dangerous surfaced inside Dante.

Something ancient.

Something wounded.

The mention of his father had touched a nerve.

Volkov knew it too.

That was why he smiled.

"Dante."

Emma's voice cut through the tension.

His eyes shifted toward her.

Only for a second.

But that second saved lives.

Because Volkov drew his weapon.

Fast.

Far faster than a man his age should move.

The shot rang out.

Emma screamed.

Time slowed.

Dante moved.

Without hesitation.

Without thought.

Without fear.

He stepped directly into the bullet's path.

The impact slammed into his shoulder.

Blood exploded across his shirt.

The force knocked him sideways.

The room erupted.

Luca fired first.

Three guards followed.

Volkov disappeared behind cover.

The warehouse transformed into hell.

Emma couldn't breathe.

"Dante!"

He was already getting up.

Already moving.

Already fighting.

Blood soaked his sleeve.

Yet he never looked at the wound.

Only at her.

Always her.

The realization hit harder than anything else.

The bullet had been meant for Emma.

And he had stepped in front of it.

Not because he was obligated.

Not because he was responsible.

Because he couldn't bear the alternative.

Hours later, the warehouse burned.

Volkov escaped.

Barely.

The war continued.

But Emma was safe.

That was all Dante cared about.

The private medical team arrived before sunrise.

The penthouse transformed into a temporary hospital.

Doctors stitched the wound.

Removed the bullet.

Ordered rest.

Dante ignored them.

Naturally.

Emma entered his bedroom just after dawn.

He sat beside the window.

Shirtless.

Bandaged.

Infuriatingly alive.

The city stretched beyond the glass.

Neither spoke immediately.

Finally Emma crossed the room.

"You could have died."

Dante looked away.

"Maybe."

"Maybe?"

His jaw tightened.

"I wasn't calculating odds."

Emma stared at him.

"Then what were you doing?"

Silence.

Long silence.

Then:

"Choosing."

The answer shattered her defenses.

Because she understood.

He had chosen.

Chosen her.

Chosen her life over his own.

No conditions.

No negotiations.

No hesitation.

The realization terrified her.

Because it forced her to confront something she'd been avoiding for weeks.

Her feelings.

Emma slowly sat beside him.

Neither spoke.

The silence wasn't uncomfortable.

It was dangerous.

Because truth lived there.

Finally Dante said quietly:

"I should send you away."

Emma looked at him.

"What?"

"The farther you are from me, the safer you'll be."

She laughed bitterly.

"We're way past that."

His expression darkened.

"That's exactly my point."

For the first time, vulnerability appeared in his eyes.

Real vulnerability.

The kind no enemy had ever witnessed.

"When they target me, people die."

Emma remained silent.

"When they target what I care about..."

His voice trailed off.

The unfinished sentence hurt more than any confession.

Because it contained one.

What I care about.

Not love.

Not yet.

But close enough.

Far too close.

A week later, another problem emerged.

The traitor.

Someone inside Dante's organization had betrayed him.

And now evidence finally existed.

Luca arrived with files.

Security footage.

Financial records.

Phone logs.

All pointing toward one man.

Marco DeLuca.

One of Dante's most trusted captains.

A man who had worked beside him for ten years.

The betrayal cut deep.

Emma saw it immediately.

Not anger.

Disappointment.

That hurt more.

"He was family," Dante said quietly.

Nobody responded.

Because everyone understood.

Family was sacred in their world.

And Marco had sold them.

For money.

Power.

Greed.

The confrontation happened that evening.

Marco denied everything.

At first.

Then the evidence appeared.

One file after another.

One secret account after another.

One lie after another.

Until denial became impossible.

The room fell silent.

Marco finally lowered his head.

And confessed.

The betrayal.

The leaks.

The arrangement with Volkov.

Everything.

Emma expected rage.

Violence.

Punishment.

Instead, Dante simply looked tired.

"So that's it?"

Marco swallowed.

"Dante—"

"Don't."

The single word ended everything.

Ten years of friendship.

Gone.

Ten years of loyalty.

Gone.

Ten years of brotherhood.

Gone.

Emma watched something inside Dante break.

Not dramatically.

Not visibly.

Quietly.

The way trust dies.

The way faith disappears.

The way hearts crack.

Later that night, Emma found him alone on the balcony.

Rain fell over Manhattan.

Cold.

Heavy.

Relentless.

Dante stood motionless.

Watching the city.

Emma joined him.

Neither spoke.

Eventually she slipped her hand into his.

The gesture surprised both of them.

But neither pulled away.

The rain continued.

The city glittered below.

And for the first time since they met, Dante Marchetti allowed himself to hold on to something good.

Not power.

Not fear.

Not control.

Her.

Just her.

Yet neither realized that far across the city, Viktor Volkov was preparing one final move.

One last attack.

One final chance to destroy Dante Marchetti forever.

And this time...

The target would not be Emma.

May you like

It would be Dante himself.
