CHAPTER 2: THE WEAKNESS THEY FOUND

CHAPTER 2: THE WEAKNESS THEY FOUND
The explosion shook the entire penthouse.
Glass shattered in every direction.
Emma screamed as Dante threw his body over hers.
The deafening crack of gunfire erupted outside.
For several terrifying seconds, the world became noise, smoke, and chaos.
"Move!"
Luca's voice echoed through the penthouse.
Guards rushed toward the shattered windows.
Others formed a protective perimeter around Dante and Emma.
Dante's hand remained firmly on the back of Emma's head, shielding her from flying debris.
Only when the gunfire stopped did he finally look down at her.
"Are you hurt?"
Emma stared at him.
The question felt absurd.
The penthouse had just been attacked.
Someone had tried to kill them.
Yet the first thing he asked was whether she was hurt.
"I... I don't think so."
Dante immediately checked her shoulders, arms, and face for injuries.
Only when he confirmed she was unharmed did he stand.
His expression transformed.
Whatever humanity Emma had seen moments earlier vanished.
The man standing before her now was not Dante.
He was Marchetti.
The king of New York's underworld.
Luca approached.
"Sniper team across the street."
"Casualties?"
"Two injured."
Dante's jaw tightened.
"Dead?"
"No."
A dangerous silence followed.
"Find them."
Luca nodded.
"They're already running."
"Then run faster."
The room became still.
Nobody questioned him.
Nobody argued.
Everyone moved.
Emma watched in shock.
For the first time, she understood why entire criminal organizations feared this man.
Not because he was cruel.
Because he was inevitable.
Like a storm.
Like gravity.
Like death.
Hours later, dawn painted Manhattan in shades of gray.
The penthouse looked like a war zone.
Broken glass covered the floor.
Security teams inspected every corner.
Emma sat in the kitchen wrapped in a blanket.
She hadn't slept.
Neither had Dante.
He stood by the window speaking quietly into a phone.
The conversation lasted only thirty seconds.
Then he hung up.
"What happened?" Emma finally asked.
Dante remained silent.
"What aren't you telling me?"
His eyes met hers.
"The Volkov organization knows about you."
The words landed like a punch.
Emma swallowed.
"Because they followed me?"
"No."
His expression darkened.
"Because someone inside my organization told them."
A traitor.
Emma immediately understood.
The realization made her stomach twist.
Someone close to Dante had betrayed him.
Someone powerful enough to leak information.
Someone dangerous enough to start a war.
For the first time since entering his world, Emma felt genuinely afraid.
Not of Dante.
Of the people surrounding him.
Three days passed.
The city grew tense.
Whispers spread through New York's criminal networks.
The Marchettis and the Volkovs were preparing for war.
Meanwhile, Emma remained trapped inside the tower.
Protected.
Guarded.
Watched.
Every elevator required authorization.
Every hallway contained security.
Every entrance had armed personnel.
She felt like a prisoner wearing designer clothes.
On the fourth day, Dante finally returned.
He looked exhausted.
Blood stained the cuff of his white shirt.
Emma immediately noticed.
"What happened?"
"Nothing."
"That's blood."
"It isn't mine."
The answer wasn't reassuring.
Dante poured himself a drink.
Emma crossed her arms.
"You can't keep saying everything is fine."
"I wasn't aware I was saying that."
She glared at him.
To her surprise, he almost smiled.
Almost.
Then his phone rang.
The change in his expression was immediate.
Cold.
Focused.
Dangerous.
He answered.
Listened.
Said nothing.
Then hung up.
The silence afterward felt suffocating.
"What is it?" Emma asked.
For several seconds he didn't respond.
Finally he said:
"My mother."
Emma blinked.
"What about her?"
"Someone tried to reach her."
The room went silent.
Dante rarely spoke about family.
In fact, Emma knew almost nothing about them.
She only knew his mother lived in a heavily guarded estate outside the city.
The fact that someone had targeted her...
That meant the war was escalating.
Rapidly.
"Is she okay?"
"Yes."
His voice remained calm.
Too calm.
Which somehow made it worse.
Emma slowly approached.
"Dante."
He looked at her.
And for the first time she saw genuine fear.
Not for himself.
For someone else.
The realization hit unexpectedly hard.
This wasn't a monster incapable of love.
This was a son terrified of losing his mother.
The same way Emma feared losing hers.
The same wound.
Different worlds.
One week later everything exploded again.
This time literally.
Emma had insisted on visiting her mother.
Against Dante's advice.
Against Luca's warnings.
Against everyone's judgment.
She couldn't stay hidden forever.
The hospital seemed safe.
Normal.
Ordinary.
Exactly what she needed.
For two hours she sat beside her mother's bed.
Talking.
Laughing.
Pretending life made sense.
Then she left.
The attack happened in the parking garage.
A van screeched around the corner.
Three masked men jumped out.
Emma froze.
One grabbed her arm.
Another covered her mouth.
The third pulled a weapon.
Everything happened in seconds.
Pure panic consumed her.
She kicked.
Bit.
Screamed.
Fought.
But they were stronger.
The last thing she saw before being shoved into the van was one of Dante's security guards collapsing onto the concrete.
Blood spreading beneath him.
Then darkness.
The ride felt endless.
Hours.
Maybe less.
Emma couldn't tell.
Eventually the vehicle stopped.
She was dragged into an abandoned warehouse.
Her hands tied.
Her ankles restrained.
The air smelled like rust and oil.
Fear settled deep inside her chest.
This was real.
Not movies.
Not stories.
Real.
A heavy door opened.
Footsteps echoed.
A tall man entered.
Silver hair.
Expensive suit.
Cold eyes.
He smiled.
Emma immediately hated him.
"You must be Emma."
She said nothing.
The man's smile widened.
"I am Viktor Volkov."
The name sent ice through her veins.
The enemy.
The man behind everything.
Volkov pulled up a chair.
Sat down.
Crossed one leg over the other.
Studied her.
"I expected someone different."
Emma remained silent.
"Do you know how many people have died because of you?"
That got her attention.
"What?"
Volkov laughed.
"Interesting."
"You didn't know."
Emma's pulse accelerated.
"What are you talking about?"
Volkov leaned forward.
"Marchetti has become irrational."
His smile disappeared.
"Dangerously irrational."
Something in his tone sounded personal.
Almost offended.
"As long as you existed, eventually he would make a mistake."
Emma stared at him.
"You kidnapped me because you think he cares?"
Volkov laughed again.
A dark sound.
"You still don't understand."
The old man stood.
Walked toward the window.
"Before you arrived, Dante Marchetti was unbeatable."
He turned.
"But then he looked at you."
Emma's heart pounded.
"No."
Volkov smiled.
"Oh yes."
For the first time, genuine concern appeared in his eyes.
"That is why he terrifies me."
Meanwhile, across Manhattan, Dante Marchetti was destroying everything in his path.
The moment he learned Emma had been taken, something inside him snapped.
The first warehouse was empty.
The second contained weapons.
The third contained answers.
A man screamed from a chair.
Blood covered the floor.
Luca stood nearby.
Watching.
Waiting.
The prisoner finally broke.
"Pier forty-two."
Dante released him.
Immediately.
The man collapsed.
Crying.
Begging.
Dante didn't hear any of it.
He was already walking away.
Toward the war.
Toward Emma.
Toward the people who had just made the biggest mistake of their lives.
Back at the warehouse, Emma sat alone.
Hours passed.
Night arrived.
Then footsteps echoed again.
Volkov returned.
This time carrying photographs.
He tossed them onto a table.
Emma looked down.
Her blood froze.
The pictures showed Dante.
Covered in blood.
Holding weapons.
Standing beside bodies.
Evidence.
Years of violence.
Years of death.
Years of darkness.
Volkov watched carefully.
Waiting for her reaction.
"Do you see him now?"
Emma stared at the photographs.
The images were horrifying.
Terrifying.
Yet something felt wrong.
She looked closer.
Every picture showed violence.
But never enjoyment.
Never celebration.
Never pleasure.
Only burden.
Only responsibility.
Only consequences.
Volkov noticed.
His expression darkened.
"You're defending him."
Emma met his eyes.
"No."
"Then what?"
She looked down at the photographs.
Then back at him.
Finally she answered.
"I think you're afraid of him."
For the first time, Volkov's smile vanished completely.
At that exact moment, explosions rocked the building.
The warehouse trembled.
Alarms erupted.
Gunfire exploded outside.
Volkov turned sharply.
His expression changed.
Not anger.
Not surprise.
Fear.
Real fear.
Emma immediately understood.
Only one person could create that reaction.
Dante.
The war had arrived.
And somewhere beyond the walls of the burning warehouse, the most dangerous man in New York was coming for her.
No matter how many people stood in his way.
No matter how much blood it cost.
No matter what he had to become.
Because the weakness his enemies believed they had discovered...
May you like
Had become the reason he was willing to burn an empire to the ground.
