Chapter 10 - The Garden of Sunshine

Six months later, the spring sun had finally returned to Chicago, melting the last of the lake ice and filling the tree-lined streets of the Gold Coast with vibrant green life. The Marcelli mansion had been completely restored, the shattered walls replaced with fresh limestone, the grand marble floors polished until they reflected the blue sky like mirrors.
In the eastern ridge garden, the sun was pouring through the leaves of the old oak trees, illuminating a scene that Vincent Marcelli watched from the terrace with a profound, unshakeable peace.
Misha was running through the grass, his cheeks fully flushed, his laughter ringing through the afternoon air as he chased a golden retriever puppy that Vincent had bought for him last week. He was no longer the hollow, bluish boy from Apartment 3C. He was a healthy, happy child who had forgotten what it felt like to be hungry.
Standing beside the rose bushes was Elena.
She was wearing a magnificent gown of white silk lace, her blonde hair pinned back elegantly with a diamond tiara that had belonged to Vincent’s mother. She looked like a true empress, her blue eyes shining with a radiant warmth that transformed the entire garden.
Vincent stepped down from the terrace, his tailored black tuxedo immaculate, his leather boots making no sound against the lush grass as he walked straight toward his bride.
The official wedding ceremony had concluded twenty minutes ago inside the private chapel on the estate grounds. The capos, the city officials, and the high Dons of the commission had all signed the registry, recognizing Elena Volkoff as the official Donna of the Marcelli empire.
Vincent reached out, his massive hand catching her waist, pulling her gently against his chest. He looked down at her face, his thumb tracing the smooth, clean skin of her jawline.
"Are you happy, my love?" Vincent whispered, his voice deep and rich with an emotion he had never allowed himself to feel before she walked into his house.
Elena smiled, her fingers tangling in the silk lapels of his tuxedo as she looked up into his piercing ice-blue eyes.
"I’m happy, Vincent," she murmured, her voice melodic and steady. "Misha asked me this morning if we were still living in the king's palace. I told him no. I told him we aren't living with a king anymore. We're living with a family. You gave us more than just your food, Vincent. You gave us our lives back."
May you like
Vincent smiled, a genuine, beautiful expression that erased the years of violence and blood from his rugged features. He leaned down, his lips brushing against hers in a slow, deep, and fiercely possessive kiss that sealed a promise they had both made in the dark stairwell of 24th Street.
The paper bag had split open, the secrets had been laid bare, and the thief of hunger had been completely annihilated by the power of a love that was built to last forever. The Marcelli family was whole, their kingdom was secure, and the sunshine in their garden would never fade again.
