Chapter 7 - The Shadow of the Bratva

The peace of the Marcelli estate was shattered on a crisp October afternoon.
Elena was walking back from the cottage after having lunch with Misha when she noticed a fleet of black SUVs parked in the main courtyard. The Marcelli soldiers were standing at absolute attention, their hands resting firmly on the lapels of their jackets, their eyes scanning the tree lines with a high, defensive alertness.
Inside the grand foyer, the sound of shouting echoed from Vincent’s private conference room.
Elena crept up the service staircase, her heart hammering against her ribs as she reached the balcony overlooking the room. She peered through the wooden balustrade, her breath catching in her throat.
Sitting across from Vincent at the massive mahogany table was a man she recognized instantly from her childhood nightmares—Viktor Romanov, the current premier of the Bratva syndicate on the North Side. He was a brutal, heavy-set man with a thick grey beard and a jagged scar that cut across his left eyelid. Behind him stood four massive Russian enforcers, their hands visible on their holstered weapons.
"You're hiding her, Marcelli," Viktor growled, slamming his fist onto the table.
"Nikolai Volkoff’s daughter. We traced her transit records to your household three weeks ago. She’s a fugitive from the Bratva council. Her father stole twenty million dollars from our private accounts before we put him in the ground, and we know he gave her the access keys before he died. Turn her over to us, and the shipping routes through the North Side remain open to your trucks. Refuse, and we will turn the Chicago river into a cemetery for your soldiers."
Elena felt the world tilt beneath her feet. Twenty million dollars. Her father hadn't left them to starve out of poverty; he had hidden the wealth to keep them safe, and now her existence was threatening the entire Marcelli empire.
She looked at Vincent, expecting to see the cold, calculating businessman who would gladly trade a maid to secure his multi-million-dollar shipping lines.
Vincent didn't flinch. He slowly leaned forward, his hands interlocking on the table, his ice-blue eyes locking onto Viktor Romanov’s face with a stillness that was more terrifying than any shout.
"You come into my house, Viktor," Vincent said, his voice smooth, quiet, and absolutely lethal.
"You threaten my shipping lines, and you demand a woman who is currently under the protection of the Marcelli name. Elena Volkoff is not a fugitive in this city. She is the private caretaker of my household. She is part of my family. If you think twenty million dollars or a few North Side blocks are worth the complete and total annihilation of your syndicate, then pull your weapon right now. Because if you leave this room without my permission, you are a dead man walking."

Viktor stood up so fast his chair crashed into the wall behind him. "This is an act of war, Marcelli!"
"No," Vincent hissed, standing up to his full, imposing height, his shadow completely swallowing the Russian Don. "An act of war is when two sides have a chance to win. This is simply an execution. Get out of my city before the sun goes down."
