Chapter 9 - The Trial of the Heart

The room fell into an incredible, weightless silence.

Hunter looked down at Lorenzo—the terrifying Don of the Rossi empire, a man who commanded fear across an entire continent—kneeling on the floor before her, holding her hand with gentle, trembling reverence.

"Lorenzo..." she choked out, tears running freely down her face now. "I'm just a maid. I'm a girl from a state home with no family, no name, and a broken past."

"I don't care about your past, Hunter," Lorenzo said fiercely, his hand tightening around hers. "I have enough blood in my past for ten lifetimes. I care about your future. I care about our future."

He reached out with his other hand and gently touched Leo's head, then looked back up into Hunter's hazel eyes.

"I am not asking you to stay as an employee," Lorenzo said softly. "I am asking you to stay as my partner. As my wife. As Leo's mother. I want to build a life with you—a real life, far away from the blood and the violence."

Hunter closed her eyes, letting the words wash over her bruised, healing heart.

For three weeks after her baby girl was born dead, she had believed her life was over. She had believed she was a shell, a ghost walking through a cold world, waiting for her own heart to stop beating. She had thought the ache in her chest was a sentence of eternal grief.

She realized now that the ache hadn't been a end. It had been a beginning. It had been the universe preparing her to save a dying boy—and to find a home in the arms of a man who understood her pain better than anyone else on earth.

Slowly, Hunter opened her eyes.

She reached out with her free hand and picked up the thick leather envelope from the table. Without breaking eye contact with Lorenzo, she tossed it out the open window, watching the five-million-dollar check and the deeds flutter down into the lake below.

Lorenzo’s eyes widened slightly. "Hunter..."

"I don't want your money, Lorenzo Rossi," Hunter smiled through her tears, a genuine, beautiful smile that lit up the entire room. "I told you that on the first day."

"Then what do you want?" Lorenzo asked, a breathless smile breaking across his own face.

Hunter leaned down and kissed his forehead, then looked into his dark, loving eyes.

"I want you to hold your son," she whispered.

Lorenzo didn't hesitate this time.

Slowly, carefully, he reached out his heavy arms. Hunter gently transferred the sleeping baby into his father's lap.

Lorenzo pulled Leo against his broad chest. The baby stirred softly, opened his dark eyes, looked up at his father, and let out a tiny, content gurgle, resting his small head directly over Lorenzo’s pounding heart.

Tears finally welled in Lorenzo Rossi’s eyes, spilling over his rugged cheeks as he pressed his lips against his son’s forehead, pulling Hunter into his arms with his free hand.

The ghost of Sophia was finally at peace. The blood war was over. And in the warm sunlight of the Greenwich estate, a broken family had finally been made whole.
