Chapter 5 - The Breach

"Code Red! Perimeter breach at the North Gate!"

Marco’s voice crackled over the intercom system, distorted by static and the background sound of automatic gunfire. "Boss! They’re inside the courtyard! Heavy ordnance! Get to the vault!"

Lorenzo didn't panic. In an instant, the grieving father vanished, replaced by the lethal, calculating predator who ruled the New York underworld.

He drew a custom black semi-automatic pistol from beneath his jacket with terrifying speed, racking the slide with a sharp, metallic clack.

"Stay down!" Lorenzo barked at Hunter.

The windows of the nursery—reinforced bulletproof glass four inches thick—shook violently as an explosion detonated somewhere near the front gardens. The lights flickered, died, and were instantly replaced by the dull red glow of the emergency backup generators.

Hunter instinctively curled her body over Leo, hugging him to her chest as the baby woke up, screaming in terror at the deafening noise.

"Lorenzo!" Hunter cried out, using his first name for the first time.

Lorenzo swept to the wall behind the crib. He pressed his hand against a section of dark wood paneling. A hidden biometric scanner glowed blue, reading his palm print. With a heavy hydraulic hiss, a section of the wall slid back, revealing a reinforced steel elevator shaft.

"Get in!" Lorenzo commanded, pulling Hunter to her feet by her arm.

"What about you?!" she screamed over the sound of automatic rifle fire echoing from the floor below.

"I am going to kill whoever stepped onto my property," Lorenzo said, his voice terrifyingly calm, his eyes glowing with murderous intent. "This elevator leads directly to the subterranean bunker beneath the cliff. Marco has the override keys. Go!"

He shoved her inside the small, steel-lined elevator.

Just as the heavy blast doors began to slide shut, two men in black tactical gear burst through the nursery’s main entrance. They carried suppressed submachine guns, their faces hidden behind dark balaclavas.

"Rossi!" one of the men yelled, raising his weapon.

Lorenzo didn't even flinch. He stepped into the line of fire, his pistol barking three times in rapid succession—bang, bang, bang.

The first man collapsed instantly, his helmet painted with red. The second man staggered backward as Lorenzo charged him like a runaway freight train, slamming him through the doorway and out into the hallway.

The heavy steel blast doors of the elevator locked into place, sealing Hunter and baby Leo in absolute, impenetrable darkness.

The elevator dropped quickly, plunging deep into the bedrock of the Long Island cliffs.

Inside the small steel box, Hunter sat on the cold floor, cradling the screaming infant against her heart. The sound of the gunfire was gone, replaced by the mechanical hum of the descent and the frantic beating of her own chest.

"Shh... shh, sweet boy," Hunter wept, rocking back and forth in the pitch black. "I'm here. I've got you. I won't let them hurt you."

She pulled him closer, tucking his little head under her chin, burying her face in his soft skin.

It was in that dark, subterranean elevator, surrounded by steel and concrete, that Hunter realized the terrifying, irrevocable truth: she didn't care about the money, she didn't care about the mafia, and she didn't care about her own safety anymore.

She loved this baby. She loved him with every broken, shattered piece of her soul.

And if anyone wanted to take him, they would have to kill her first.

The elevator shuddered to a halt.

The heavy doors hissed open.

Standing in the dimly lit concrete bunker below was not Marco. Nor was it Lorenzo.

It was a man wearing an expensive tailored suit, his silver hair slicked back, a cruel, mocking smile playing across his face. In his right hand, he held a revolver with a long silver suppressor attached to the barrel.

"Well, well, well," the man said, his voice dripping with venomous satisfaction. "What do we have here? Lorenzo's little secret."

Hunter scrambled backward against the elevator wall, her arms tightening around Leo like a vise. "Who are you?"

The man chuckled, stepping into the elevator shaft. "My name is Don Mateo Moretti. And that little bastard in your arms... is the end of the Rossi bloodline."
