Chapter 5 – “The Man Who Would Burn the World for Her”

The first thing Richard Bennett did was destroy my name.
The second thing he did was make the world believe him.
By noon, every major news channel had the same story.
“Billionaire Richard Bennett Accused of Harassment by Unknown Woman.”
“Mystery Woman Interrupts Private Business Event.”
“Bennett Development Denies False Claims From Alleged Daughter.”
I watched the reports from my mother's hospital room with a strange emptiness inside me.
Not anger.
Not even sadness.
Just exhaustion.
Because I had spent my entire life being invisible.
And now, suddenly, I was visible.
But only because someone powerful needed a villain.
The reporter's voice echoed through the room.
“Sources close to Richard Bennett claim the woman involved attempted to create a public disturbance during an exclusive investor gathering…”
I turned off the television.
My hands were shaking.
“He’s rewriting everything.”
My mother looked at me from the hospital bed.
She looked older than yesterday.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like watching this happen had taken another piece of her.
“He was always good at that.”
I looked at her.
“At what?”
“Changing the story until he became the victim.”
A bitter smile appeared on her face.
“Your father could fall from a building and convince everyone the ground attacked him.”
Despite everything, I almost laughed.
Almost.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?”
A familiar voice.
“Meera.”
I stood immediately.
“Alessandro.”
My mother looked at me.
“What happened?”
I stepped away.
“Where are you?”
The question surprised me.
“Why?”
“Because you need to leave the hospital.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
“Now.”
His voice was different.
Not calm.
Not controlled.
Angry.
“Alessandro, what is happening?”
“Richard sent someone.”
I froze.
“Someone to do what?”
A pause.
Then:
“To make sure you stop talking.”
The room suddenly felt colder.
I looked around.
The hospital suddenly didn't feel safe anymore.
“My mother—”
“She is being moved.”
“What?”
“I arranged a private recovery facility.”
“No.”
My answer came immediately.
“I’m not hiding my mother.”
“You are not hiding.”
His voice softened slightly.
“You are protecting her.”
I hated that he made sense.
“I don't want to run.”
“You're not running.”
A pause.
“You're surviving.”
Twenty minutes later, everything changed.
A private medical team arrived.
Security doubled.
The hospital staff suddenly treated my mother differently.
And for the first time, I saw the true reach of Alessandro Romano.
He didn't just have money.
He had influence.
People moved because he asked.
Doors opened.
Problems disappeared.
It should have frightened me.
Instead, it made me wonder something dangerous.
How many times had this man helped people without anyone knowing?
How many lives had been saved by someone the world only feared?
The private recovery facility was hidden outside the city.
Beautiful.
Quiet.
Safe.
My mother hated it immediately.
“I feel like a prisoner.”
I smiled slightly.
“You've been here ten minutes.”
“That’s enough.”
I sat beside her.
“Mom.”
She looked at me.
“Tell me the truth.”
Her face changed.
Because she knew what question was coming.
“Why did Dad leave?”
The silence lasted so long I thought she wouldn't answer.
Then she whispered:
“Because of you.”
My entire body went still.
“What?”
She reached for my hand.
“Not because he hated you.”
“That’s not possible.”
“It is.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“When you were born, Richard changed.”
I frowned.
“He loved you.”
The words hurt.
Because I had spent twelve years believing the opposite.
“He held you for hours.”
My breath caught.
“He said you were the most beautiful thing he had ever seen.”
I looked away.
“Then why?”
My mother closed her eyes.
“Because Richard was afraid.”
“Of me?”
“No.”
A pause.
“Of what you represented.”
I didn't understand.
“Your father had built relationships with dangerous people.”
She looked toward the window.
“People who believed family was a weakness.”
I thought of Alessandro.
“He was told that a man with a daughter could be controlled.”
My chest tightened.
“So he left.”
“He thought he was protecting himself.”
My voice became bitter.
“He abandoned us.”
“Yes.”
My mother squeezed my hand.
“And it was the biggest mistake he ever made.”
That night, Alessandro came.
Not as a businessman.
Not as the mafia king.
Just as Alessandro.
He stood outside my mother's room.
He didn't enter.
I noticed.
“You can come in.”
He looked surprised.
“You're allowing me?”
I almost smiled.
“You saved her life.”
A pause.
“I didn't save her.”
“Yes, you did.”
“No.”
His voice softened.
“Your mother saved mine first.”
I looked at him.
“You really never forgot.”
“Never.”
The answer was immediate.
There was something about it.
Something painful.
“You loved her.”
His eyes moved away.
“I respected her.”
“That isn't what I asked.”
Silence.
Then:
“I cared about her.”
I nodded.
“And now you're protecting me because of her?”
His eyes returned to mine.
At first, I expected him to say yes.
But he didn't.

“No.”
The answer surprised me.
“Then why?”
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then:
“Because of you.”
My heart skipped.
I looked away.
“That doesn't make sense.”
“It doesn't have to.”
“Alessandro.”
“Yes?”
“You barely know me.”
A small, almost invisible smile appeared.
“That's the problem.”
“What?”
“I want to.”
The words were simple.
But they carried more weight than anything else he had said.
Three days passed.
Three days of learning the truth.
Three days of watching my father's empire start to crack.
Because Alessandro released the first piece of evidence.
Not everything.
Just enough.
A financial document.
A single transaction.
A connection between Bennett Development and hidden offshore accounts.
The media changed instantly.
The same people who praised Richard yesterday questioned him today.
And Richard knew exactly who was responsible.
Richard stood inside his office, staring at the city.
“You think you’ve won?”
He spoke to the empty room.
Then he smiled.
Because Richard Bennett had survived worse.
He had survived poverty.
Betrayal.
Enemies.
He had survived by sacrificing people.
And he was willing to sacrifice again.
His phone rang.
He answered.
“She is with Romano.”
The voice on the other end confirmed.
“Yes.”
Richard closed his eyes.
Then he said something that surprised even himself.
“Bring me my daughter.”
I was leaving my mother's room when Alessandro appeared.
His expression was unreadable.
That was how I knew something was wrong.
“What happened?”
He didn't answer immediately.
Then:
“Richard knows where you are.”
My stomach dropped.
“How?”
“We have a leak.”
“Can we trust anyone?”
His silence answered.
I looked at him.
“What are you not telling me?”
A muscle moved in his jaw.
“I should have protected you better.”
“Alessandro.”
“He was never supposed to reach you.”
I stepped closer.
“You can't control everything.”
His eyes met mine.
For the first time, I saw something beneath the power.
Fear.
Not fear for himself.
Fear for me.
“You don't understand.”
“Then explain.”
His voice lowered.
“I have spent my entire life building walls.”
A pause.
“People fear me because they know I have nothing to lose.”
I stayed silent.
“But now…”
His eyes held mine.
“Now I have something.”
My breath caught.
Before I could answer, the lights went out.
Everything became darkness.
A second later—
The sound of breaking glass echoed through the building.
Security alarms exploded.
Men shouted outside.
Alessandro moved instantly.
He grabbed my hand.
Not roughly.
Protectively.
“Stay behind me.”
I looked at him.
“You're scared.”
He looked surprised.
“What?”
“You're scared.”
For a moment, the terrifying mafia boss disappeared.
And I saw the man underneath.
The man who had once been saved by my mother.
The man who had spent years alone.
“Yes.”
The honesty shocked me.
“I am.”
The hallway filled with footsteps.
Alessandro pulled me closer.
“Because if something happens to you…”
He stopped.
Like the words were too difficult.
Then he finished:
“I don't know what I would become.”
The doors at the end of the hallway burst open.
Men rushed in.
Security moved.
Chaos exploded.
But through all of it…
Alessandro never let go of my hand.
Because the entire world knew Alessandro Romano as a man who destroyed anyone who threatened him.
But nobody knew the truth.
The most dangerous man in the city had finally found his weakness.
And it wasn't money.
It wasn't power.
It wasn't revenge.
It was a woman who had walked into his elevator carrying nothing except a hospital bill and a broken heart.

And now…
He would burn the entire world before he let anyone break hers.
