Chapter 4 – “Blood, Betrayal, and the Bennett Empire”

The moment I walked into my mother’s hospital room, I knew something had changed.

Not because of the machines.

Not because of the doctors.

Not because of the scar hidden beneath the blanket after her surgery.

It was because my mother looked at me differently.

Like she wasn't seeing her daughter anymore.

Like she was seeing the little girl she had spent twelve years protecting finally standing at the door of the truth.

“Meera.”

Her voice was weak, but her eyes were clear.

I rushed to her side.

“Mom.”

I grabbed her hand carefully.

“How are you feeling?”

She smiled faintly.

“Still alive.”

A small laugh escaped me.

“That’s your answer to everything.”

“It usually works.”

For a few seconds, we pretended everything was normal.

Like I hadn't discovered my mother had secrets.

Like my father hadn't erased us from his life.

Like Alessandro Romano wasn't waiting outside the room because my entire past was connected to him.

But pretending had always been my family's specialty.

And I was tired of pretending.

“Mom.”

Her smile faded.

She knew.

She knew from the way I said it.

“What happened?”

I looked at her.

“You knew Alessandro Romano.”

The room became silent.

My mother's fingers tightened around mine.

“I knew you would find out eventually.”

The words hurt more than I expected.

“Eventually?”

I stared at her.

“How long were you planning to keep this from me?”

She looked away.

“Forever, if I could.”

I felt something crack inside me.

“Why?”

“Because I wanted you to have a normal life.”

I almost laughed.

“A normal life?”

My voice shook.

“Mom, I spent twelve years watching you work until your hands hurt because my father left.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I know.”

“I watched people whisper about us.”

“I know.”

“I watched you pretend you weren't hurt.”

“I know.”

My voice became softer.

“And now I find out there was an entire part of your life you hid from me.”

She closed her eyes.

“I was trying to protect you.”

“From what?”

Her answer came quietly.

“From men like Richard Bennett.”

I stopped.

Because that wasn't the answer I expected.

Not Alessandro.

Not the mafia.

Richard.

My father.

“My father wasn't always rich.”

My mother stared at the ceiling.

“Did you know that?”

I shook my head.

“Your father was ambitious.”

A bitter smile appeared on her face.

“Too ambitious.”

She took a slow breath.

“When I met Richard, he was charming.”

I looked down.

Of course he was.

Men like him always were.

“He had nothing.”

She continued.

“No money. No company. No influence.”

“Then how did he become Richard Bennett?”

Her eyes moved to mine.

“Because he found people who had what he wanted.”

I already knew the answer.

“Alessandro.”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

The word felt heavy.

“Your father approached him when he was young.”

“Why?”

“Investment.”

She paused.

“Protection.”

I frowned.

“Protection from what?”

My mother looked at me.

“From himself.”

I didn't understand.

“He wanted to become powerful quickly. Alessandro had resources. Connections. Money.”

“And my father took it.”

“He borrowed it.”

She corrected gently.

“Then he refused to pay it back.”

My stomach tightened.

“He stole from him?”

“Not just money.”

Her voice became quieter.

“Trust.”

When I left the hospital room, Alessandro was waiting.

Of course he was.

He stood near the window at the end of the hallway.

Black suit.

Calm expression.

A man who looked like he belonged anywhere except a hospital.

But somehow…

He belonged there.

Because he was the only person who had shown up.

I walked toward him.

“You knew.”

He didn't pretend.

“Yes.”

“You knew my father stole from you.”

“Yes.”

“You knew my mother was hiding.”

“Yes.”

My anger rose.

“And you never told me?”

His expression didn't change.

“Would you have believed me?”

I stopped.

Because the answer was no.

A week ago, if someone told me my father was connected to a mafia empire, I would have laughed.

If someone told me Alessandro Romano was protecting my family, I would have thought they were insane.

“You should have given me the choice.”

“Yes.”

The immediate agreement surprised me.

“I should have.”

He looked away.

“But your mother asked me not to.”

My anger softened.

“She asked you?”

“She was afraid.”

“Of you?”

His eyes returned to mine.

“No.”

A pause.

“Of what would happen if you knew.”

The hallway felt colder.

“What exactly is happening?”

Alessandro didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he handed me a folder.

I opened it.

Inside were documents.

Contracts.

Bank records.

Photographs.

And one name repeated over and over.

Richard Bennett.

My hands shook.

“This is impossible.”

“No.”

Alessandro's voice was calm.

“This is what he spent twelve years hiding.”

I looked through the pages.

My father.

The man who appeared on magazine covers.

The man people praised for building an empire.

Had built everything on stolen foundations.

“He lied to everyone.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Alessandro looked at me.

“Because some people don't want success.”

A pause.

“They want to prove they deserve to exist.”

That sentence stayed with me.

Because suddenly I understood something.

My father hadn't abandoned me because he didn't care.

He abandoned me because I reminded him of the life he wanted to erase.

A life where he wasn't powerful.

A life where he wasn't respected.

A life where he was just Richard.

Not Richard Bennett.

That evening, Richard Bennett watched the news from his office.

A reporter was praising his company's latest project.

“Bennett Development continues its incredible growth under CEO Richard Bennett…”

He turned the television off.

Because he wasn't listening to the reporter.

He was listening to the message his assistant had just delivered.

“Romano has the documents.”

Richard's face went pale.

“How?”

“We don't know.”

He walked toward his desk.

For twelve years, he believed he had won.

He had buried Elena's past.

Destroyed the evidence.

Created a new family.

A new reputation.

A new identity.

But he had made one mistake.

One impossible mistake.

He forgot about the daughter he abandoned.

Because Meera was the one thing he couldn't control.

“She has to disappear.”

The assistant froze.

“Sir?”

Richard looked at him.

“Not permanently.”

A pause.

“But she cannot keep digging.”

The next morning, I returned to my apartment.

Or what used to be my apartment.

The police had already come.

Nothing valuable was stolen.

But something was missing.

My mother's old box.

The one she kept locked in the closet.

The one she told me never to open.

I called her immediately.

“Mom.”

Her voice was weak.

“What happened?”

“The box.”

Silence.

“Meera…”

“Someone took it.”

Another silence.

Then:

“Listen to me carefully.”

I sat down.

“What is inside?”

“My past.”

I swallowed.

“Mom.”

Her voice trembled.

“There is a letter.”

“From who?”

“Your father.”

I froze.

“A letter from Richard?”

“Yes.”

“What does it say?”

She didn't answer.

“Mom?”

Finally:

“It says why he left.”

My heart stopped.

Two hours later, Alessandro arrived.

Not with guards.

Not with his usual intimidating presence.

Just him.

When he saw my face, he knew something was wrong.

“What happened?”

I told him.

About the box.

About the letter.

About my father's hidden explanation.

His expression became dark.

“Richard took it.”

“How do you know?”

“Because there is only one reason he would risk entering your home.”

“What?”

Alessandro looked at me.

“He is afraid of what that letter reveals.”

I looked at him.

“And what does it reveal?”

His jaw tightened.

“I don't know.”

For some reason, that frightened me more.

Because Alessandro Romano seemed like a man who knew everything.

A man who could find anyone.

A man who could uncover any secret.

But even he didn't know this.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

And his entire expression changed.

“What happened?”

He ended the call.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then:

“Your father made his move.”

My heart sank.

“What did he do?”

Alessandro looked at me.

“He contacted the media.”

“And?”

“He is telling everyone that you are a liar.”

I stared.

“What?”

“He says you attacked his event.”

My hands went cold.

“He's making me the villain.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Alessandro stepped closer.

“Because when powerful men are cornered…”

His voice became colder.

“They don't apologize.”

“They create enemies.”

I looked toward the city outside the window.

The world suddenly felt different.

Yesterday, I was just a daughter begging her father for help.

Today, I was a woman standing between two powerful men.

One who abandoned me.

One who protected me.

One who wanted to destroy the truth.

One who wanted to uncover it.

And I finally understood something.

My father had spent twelve years running from his past.

But now his past had a name.

My name.

Meera Bennett.

And for the first time in my life…

May you like

I wasn't running after him.

He was running from me.
