Chapter 9 - The Wedding at the Harbor

Spring arrived in New York with gentle warm breezes, clear blue skies, and the fragrant blooming of thousands of white roses across the Moretti estate.
The wedding took place on the grand stone terrace overlooking the shimmering waters of the harbor.
It was not a traditional underworld wedding filled with dark suits and nervous political allies. It was a private, joyful celebration attended by close friends, staff, the children from the new hospital foundation, and the loyal soldiers who had protected the family through the storm.
The terrace was decorated with arches of white roses and green ivy. A string quartet played softly near the marble fountain where water danced in the sunlight.
Alessandro stood at the altar wearing a crisp navy-blue tuxedo. Beside him stood Marco as his best man, looking unusually refined in a tailored suit without his shoulder holster.
When the wedding march began, the heavy iron doors of the mansion opened.
Walking down the rose-petal-covered aisle was little Emma, serving as the flower girl. She wore a tiny white lace dress, carrying a wicker basket full of yellow rose petals, tossing them onto the aisle with energetic, joyful enthusiasm—though half of them ended up on Marco’s shoes.
And then came Sophia.
She was breathtaking. Her wedding dress was a masterpiece of white silk and delicate lace, with a long train that flowed behind her like a river of clouds. She carried a bouquet of white roses, her dark hair styled in an elegant updo anchored by a veil that caught the spring sunlight.
Alessandro felt his breath leave his lungs. Standing before him was not just the woman he loved, but the light that had saved his soul from eternal darkness.
As she reached the altar, her hand met his. They held each other tightly, their eyes locked in a silent vow that transcended words.
The priest, an elderly man from the Little Italy parish who had known Alessandro since childhood, smiled warmly at the couple.
"We are gathered here today," the priest began, "to unite two souls in the sacred bond of marriage. A bond forged not in quiet times, but tested through fire, proven through devotion, and blessed by love."
When the time came for the vows, Alessandro looked directly into Sophia’s eyes, his voice steady, deep, and filled with profound emotion.
"Sophia," Alessandro said, "for twenty-seven years, I believed my life was meant to be lived in cold shadows. I thought strength meant feeling nothing, and survival meant trusting no one. Then a tiny girl tried to wash my shirt, and a brave woman risked everything to protect her daughter. You brought light into a dark house. You gave me a reason to live, a reason to build, and a family to love. I promise to protect you, respect you, and cherish you for every day of my life."
Sophia smiled through her joyful tears, her voice soft and sweet. "Alessandro, when I came to this house, I was afraid of the world and afraid for my child's future. You showed us that true strength is not about fear, but about fierce, unconditional love. You became our shield, our home, and our heart. I give you my life, my love, and my soul, forever."
"By the power vested in me," the priest declared, raising his hands, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."

Alessandro pulled Sophia into his arms, dipping her slightly as he kissed her deeply, passionately, under the warm afternoon sun.
The terrace erupted into cheers and applause. Emma ran up, throwing her tiny arms around both of their legs, giggled as Alessandro scooped both his wife and his daughter up into his arms, holding them tight against his heart.
