Chapter 8 - The Winter Gala

The annual New York Business League Gala was the premier event of the winter season—a glittering gathering of billionaires, politicians, corporate titans, and high-society elites held in the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel.

In years past, Alessandro Moretti had attended the event alone, staying for precisely twenty minutes, making his presence felt, signing necessary political contributions, and leaving before the first course was served. He was a shadow that loomed over the room, a man everyone feared and no one dared approach.

Tonight was different.

When the heavy brass doors of the Plaza ballroom opened at 8:00 PM, the chatter of three hundred wealthy elites died down to a sudden, stunned hush.

Alessandro Moretti stepped into the room.

He looked devastatingly handsome in a custom-tailored black tuxedo, his graying hair combed back neatly, his tall, broad-shouldered frame commanding total authority.

But it wasn't Alessandro that made three hundred aristocrats gasp in shock.

Arm-in-arm with him was Sophia Rossi. She looked breathtaking in a floor-length emerald green velvet gown that complimented her dark hair and porcelain skin, wearing a simple, elegant diamond necklace—a heirloom that had belonged to Alessandro’s mother.

And walking proudly between them, holding Alessandro’s left hand with one tiny white-gloved paw, was four-year-old Emma, wearing a matching emerald green dress with a white silk bow in her hair.

"Is that... Moretti?" a senator whispered to his wife near the bar. "Who is the woman?"

"That’s Sophia Rossi," a prominent real estate mogul replied in a hushed, awe-struck tone. "The head of the Moretti Children’s Foundation. They say Moretti transferred half his estate to her name last month."

Alessandro walked through the crowd with complete composure, his head held high, his hand resting gently against the small of Sophia’s back. He didn't care about the stares, the hushed whispers, or the flashing cameras of the society reporters near the entrance.

He walked straight toward the main table where Mayor Arthur Vance—Bernardo Vance’s distant cousin and a long-time political adversary—sat surrounded by city commissioners.

Mayor Vance looked up, his face pale and tight as Alessandro approached.

"Alessandro," Mayor Vance said stiffly, standing up to shake his hand. "I... I didn't expect you to bring guests tonight."

"Mayor Vance," Alessandro said, his voice smooth and commanding. "I’d like to introduce my fiancée, Sophia Rossi, and our daughter, Emma."

The word fiancée echoed across the table like a thunderclap.

Sophia looked up at Alessandro, her eyes wide with surprised delight, a soft, beautiful flush coming to her cheeks. She hadn't expected him to announce it so publicly, but the absolute pride and devotion in his voice made her heart soar.

Mayor Vance swallowed hard, looking down at little Emma, who gave him a polite, cheerful little wave. "It... it is an honor to meet you, Ms. Rossi. Congratulations to you both."

"Thank you, Mayor," Sophia said, her voice steady, graceful, and filled with quiet confidence. "We are looking forward to working closely with the city on the new children's hospital project."

For the rest of the evening, the man who had once been known only as the ruthless "Wolf of the East River" walked through the grand ballroom not as a feared mob boss, but as a devoted partner and a proud father. He introduced Sophia to senators, corporate directors, and foreign ambassadors, listening attentively as she spoke passionately about her charitable work, holding Emma on his hip whenever the little girl got tired of walking.

As the orchestra began playing a slow, romantic waltz, Alessandro led Sophia onto the center of the dance floor.

He pulled her close, his hand resting on her waist, guiding her effortlessly across the polished floor under the golden light of the chandeliers.

"Fiancée?" Sophia whispered playfully, looking up into his dark, loving eyes. "You haven't even given me a ring yet, Don Moretti."

Alessandro smiled—a genuine, warm smile that lit up his entire face. He reached into his tuxedo pocket, pulled out a small velvet box, and popped it open with his thumb.

Inside rested a stunning, flawless three-carat canary diamond ring, surrounded by vintage platinum lace—the very ring his father had designed for his mother thirty years ago.

"I was waiting for the right song," Alessandro whispered softly, sliding the ring onto her finger. "Sophia Rossi... will you marry me?"

Sophia looked at the shimmering ring, then up at the man who had transformed her world from terror and dark cottages into light and absolute devotion.

May you like

"Yes," she wept happily, throwing her arms around his neck. "Yes, Alessandro! A thousand times yes!"

Around them, the entire ballroom erupted into applause, led by Marco and the Moretti guards standing near the doors, their tough, scarred faces breaking into massive grins.
