Chapter 9 - The Vow on the Moors

Spring arrived in North Yorkshire in a explosion of white hawthorn blossoms, yellow wild mustard, and bright green moorland grass.
On a glorious Saturday in May, the grand medieval chapel at Blackwood Hall was filled to overflowing with five hundred guests.
There were no faded blue dresses. There were no hidden kitchen burns. There was no cruel laughter.
Standing at the altar was Lord Marcus Vance, looking extraordinarily handsome in his grand ceremonial uniform, his silver eyes fixed with unyielding devotion on the chapel doors.
The organ swelled into a magnificent, triumphant hymn.
The doors swung open.
Walking down the aisle on the arm of her father—whose wheelchair had been fitted with quiet velvet wheels and pushed gently by a proud, smiling young groom—was Lady Levvenia Ashcroft.
Her wedding gown was a masterpiece of silver-and-white silk, woven in Lyons, adorned with three hundred perfect pearls that she had not sewed herself. A long, gossamer veil cascaded behind her, supported by four young flower girls from the tenant farms she had saved.
Beside the altar, Isidora stood as her maid of honor, weeping tears of pure, genuine joy for the sister she had finally learned to love and respect.
When Levvenia reached the altar, Marcus stepped forward, taking her hand from her father. His hand was warm, strong, and steady.
The Bishop of York stepped forward, his voice echoing through the ancient stone arches.
"Who gives this woman to be married to this man?"
Lord Gideon looked up, his voice ringing out clear and strong through the chapel. "She gives herself, with my eternal love and blessing."
When the time came for the vows, Marcus did not read from the standard prayer book. He held both of her hands in his, looking straight into her eyes.
"Levvenia," Marcus said, his deep voice carrying a power that made the stone walls seem to hum. "I do not offer you a life of quiet submission, for you were born to rule. I offer you my heart, my sword, my estate, and my absolute devotion. Where you lead, I will stand beside you. What you build, I will protect. You are my home, my equal, and my queen."
Levvenia felt a tear of pure, overwhelming happiness slip down her cheek, shining like a diamond in the sunlight streaming through the stained-glass windows.
"Marcus," she replied, her voice steady, beautiful, and ringing with absolute confidence. "I give you my love, my trust, and my future. I spent half my life building happiness for those who did not care. Now, I spend the rest of my life building a world with the man who saw me when I was invisible."

"By the power vested in me," the Bishop declared, smiling broadly, "I pronounce you Husband and Wife. Whom God hath joined together, let no man put asunder."
Marcus pulled her into his arms, kissing her with a fierce, joyful passion that brought the entire assembly of nobility, tenants, and friends to their feet in a thunderous, echoing ovation that shook the very dust from the ancient rafters.
