Chapter 6 - The Winter Ball

By December, the iron mines of Blackwood were operating at full capacity, bringing unprecedented prosperity to the entire valley. The cold, decaying fortress had been completely transformed into a warm, grand estate filled with light, laughter, and a full staff of well-paid, loyal servants.

To celebrate the estate’s salvation and to thank the local gentry and business leaders who had stood by him, Lord Marcus Vance announced a grand Winter Solstice Ball.

Invitations were sent across North Yorkshire and London. It was to be the grandest event the county had seen in a decade.

On the evening of the ball, Levvenia stood before the full-length mirror in her private apartment in the east wing.

She wore a gown of rich, deep emerald-green velvet, tailored to perfection in Paris—a gift from Marcus, though he had insisted it was merely "administrative compensation." The dress clung elegantly to her slender frame, the dark jewel tone bringing out the warm cream of her skin and the brilliant, intelligence of her dark eyes. Around her neck sat a delicate antique silver chain carrying a single, perfect teardrop emerald.

Her hair was styled in intricate, soft dark coils, held in place by silver pins shaped like winter ivy.

She looked breathtaking. Not like a fleeting, fragile debutante, but like a queen who had conquered her own kingdom.

A soft knock sounded at her door.

Levvenia opened it to find Marcus standing in the corridor. He wore a crisp, tailored black evening coat, a white silk cravat, and his military medals pinned neatly to his breast.

When his eyes fell upon her, the Marquess of Blackwood froze entirely.

His silver eyes swept over her from the silver ivy in her hair down to the hem of her emerald gown. A look of such intense, unshielded adoration passed over his sharp features that Levvenia felt her heart leap into her throat.

"Levvenia..." he breathed softly, his voice rough with emotion. "You... you are absolute perfection."

Levvenia felt a warm blush rise to her cheeks, but she met his gaze with a soft smile. "Thank you, Marcus. You clean up rather well yourself for a soldier."

Marcus offered her his arm, his silver eyes burning with quiet passion. "Shall we show Yorkshire who really runs Blackwood Hall?"

They descended the grand marble staircase together.

As they entered the blazing ballroom—filled with hundreds of laughing guests, shining crystal chandeliers, and a forty-piece orchestra—a sudden, collective hush fell over the crowd.

The nobility of Yorkshire stared up at the couple. They saw Lord Marcus Vance, the terrifying hero of the war, looking at the woman beside him as if she held the stars in her hands. And beside him stood Levvenia Ashcroft, walking with the grace, dignity, and absolute authority of a woman who had pulled an entire county out of the ashes.

Whispers broke out, but they were not the cruel, mocking whispers of Westmarch County.

"That is Lady Levvenia..." a countess whispered to her husband. "The woman who broke the London Syndicate!"

"She is stunning..." a young lord remarked in awe. "Why on earth was she hidden away in Westmarch?"

The orchestra struck up a grand, sweeping waltz.

Marcus led Levvenia to the center of the polished dance floor. He placed his large, warm hand gently against the small of her back, taking her fingers in his with a firm, protective hold.

As they began to move, gliding effortlessly across the floor under the light of a thousand candles, Levvenia looked up into his silver eyes.

"You haven't danced in years, have you?" Marcus asked softly, spinning her effortlessly around a pillar wrapped in holly.

"I have never danced, Marcus," she confessed softly. "At the balls in Westmarch, I was always behind the scenes—ensuring the musicians were paid, the punch was cold, and the guests had carriages."

May you like

Marcus pulled her a fraction of an inch closer, his thumb stroking the back of her hand.

"Then let me promise you something, Levvenia Ashcroft," he murmured, his voice dipping low, intended for her ears alone. "From this night until the end of my days, you will never stand behind the scenes again. You belong at the center of the world."
