Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of the Legacy

The weeks following the arraignment saw the complete, systematic collapse of everything the Vance family had spent decades building.

With Patricia and Daniel held without bail at Rikers Island, their various legal defenses began to turn on one another. The court-appointed attorneys realized very quickly that defending two people caught on crystal-clear 4K video disabling utilities and taking vital medication was a losing battle. The only path forward for either defendant was to turn state's evidence against the other.

In mid-August, Marcus Vance convened a meeting in his downtown office. Joining us was Assistant District Attorney Sarah Jenkins, the lead prosecutor on the criminal case.

"Daniel’s attorney reached out to my office this morning," ADA Jenkins stated, placing a thick file on the conference table. "He is offering a full guilty plea to charges of First-Degree Attempted Depraved Indifference Murder and Felony Endangerment, in exchange for testifying against his mother."

I looked at the paperwork. "What is his proposed sentence?"

"Fifteen years in state prison, with no possibility of parole for twelve," Jenkins replied. "In exchange, he will provide detailed testimony regarding Patricia’s forgery scheme, her instruction to remove your medication, and her plan to claim your life insurance policy."

"And what about Patricia?" Uncle Robert asked.

"Patricia’s legal team tried to file a motion claiming she suffers from early-stage dementia and was incapable of understanding her actions," Jenkins scoffed. "The court-appointed psychiatrist threw that out yesterday afternoon. She is entirely coherent, highly manipulative, and fully aware of what she did. Given her refusal to take a plea bargain, we are taking her to trial on twenty-two felony counts, including Attempted Murder, Grand Larceny, Forgery, and Corporate Tax Fraud."

"What happens to her assets?" I asked Marcus.

Marcus opened a second folder, displaying a detailed balance sheet. "The civil court has approved a preliminary asset seizure to cover the damages for her construction fraud. Her flagship Soho property, her residence in the Hamptons, and all associated corporate accounts have been placed under receivership. Once the civil lawsuits from the city and the private developers clear, her net worth will be negative three million dollars."

"She will be bankrupt before she ever steps into the courtroom for her criminal trial," Uncle Robert noted.

"Exactly," Marcus said. "And as for the marital estate between you and Daniel, the court has granted a total forfeiture of his equity share due to his criminal acts against you. The house, the investment portfolio, and all intellectual property are now exclusively yours."

I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window of Marcus’s office, looking out over the Hudson River.

When Daniel stood over my bed weeks ago and told me I was being dramatic, he believed he held absolute power over my life. He believed my illness had reduced me to a helpless object that could be disposed of at his convenience. He had measured my worth purely by my physical strength at my lowest moment.

He had failed to realize that physical strength is temporary, but intellect, strategy, and foresight are absolute.

"Accept Daniel’s plea deal," I told ADA Jenkins, turning around.

Jenkins raised an eyebrow. "You’re willing to let him take fifteen years instead of pushing for the maximum twenty-five?"

"Fifteen years in a maximum-security state facility is more than enough time for Daniel to reflect on his choices," I said calmly. "More importantly, his testimony will guarantee that Patricia spends the rest of her natural life behind bars. She was the architect of his malice. I want her to face the full weight of the law without any escape routes."

Jenkins smiled sharply. "Consider it done, Mrs. Vance."

"It’s not Mrs. Vance anymore," I corrected gently. "My name is Claire Sterling."
