Chapter 2 - Cold Arrival

The air at Zurich Airport was crisp and smelling faintly of jet fuel as Flight LX-15 landed smoothly on the tarmac. Inside the first-class cabin, Daniel stood up, stretched his arms, and adjusted the collar of his bespoke linen shirt. Beside him, Patricia was already applying a fresh coat of lipstick, checking her reflection in a compact mirror.

"A perfect flight," Patricia remarked, snapping the compact shut. "No screaming children, excellent champagne, and seventy-four days of pure freedom ahead of us. I told you, Daniel, taking this trip was the best decision you’ve made in years."

Daniel chuckled nervously, though a faint prickle of unease hovered at the base of his neck. He reached into his leather carry-on and retrieved his smartphone. "I just hope... I hope things don't get complicated back home."

"Complicated?" Patricia sneered softly, slipping her oversized sunglasses back on. "Claire is weak. She has always been dramatic about her little health episodes. A few days without her constant complaining will do the house good. Besides, she has no phone, no power, and no way to cause a scene. By the time anyone notices anything, it will simply be a tragic turn of events brought on by her pre-existing condition."

Daniel turned off airplane mode. "I suppose you're right."

For the first few seconds, nothing happened. Then, the phone began to vibrate violently.

It didn't just receive a notification; the device froze under an avalanche of incoming alerts, text messages, missed calls, and app notifications. The screen flashed bright red with system warnings from his banking apps.

"What is that noise?" Patricia asked, frowning as she adjusted her coat. "Turn it off, Daniel. It’s unseemly."

"Hold on," Daniel said, his fingers sweating as he tried to open his primary banking application.

A stark error message occupied the screen: ACCOUNT RESTRICTED. ACCESS DENIED. PLEASE CONTACT LEGAL COMPLIANCE.

"That's impossible," Daniel muttered. "I transferred twenty thousand dollars into the travel account yesterday."

He quickly swiped to his secondary account—a joint line of credit secured against their home. STATUS: FROZEN BY COURT ORDER.

"Mother," Daniel said, his voice dropping an octave, the color draining rapidly from his cheeks. "My cards aren't working."

Patricia laughed dismissively. "It’s just an international fraud protection hold. The bank sees a charge in Switzerland and flags it. Use my Platinum card for the driver."

She reached into her designer handbag, pulled out her black leather cardholder, and handed a heavy metal credit card to Daniel. They stepped off the jet bridge and moved toward the private customs lane reserved for VIP travelers.

At the luxury car rental counter in the arrivals terminal, a uniformed representative greeted them with a polite smile. "Welcome to Zurich, Mr. and Mrs. Vance. We have your Mercedes S-Class prepared."

"Thank you," Daniel said, handing over Patricia’s black card. "Just put the deposit on this."

The representative inserted the card into the machine. A long pause followed. The terminal beeped twice with a harsh, double-tone error. The agent tried again, swiping the magnetic strip manually.

"I am sorry, madam," the agent said politely, handing the card back to Patricia. "The transaction is declined. The response code indicates 'Account Terminated by Issuing Institution.'"

Patricia’s posture stiffened instantly. "That is absurd. That is an unlimited line of credit. Try it again."

"Mother, try another one," Daniel urged, sweat now glistening on his forehead.

Patricia produced three more cards—two corporate credit cards and a high-yield debit card tied to her private trust. The agent run each one through the machine. The result was identical for every single card: DECLINED. ACCOUNT FROZEN.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Patricia raised her voice, drawing glances from nearby travelers. "Do you know who I am? I am Patricia Vance! Call your manager immediately!"

Before the agent could respond, two officers from the Swiss Cantonal Police approached the desk. They were accompanied by an official carrying a manila folder marked with international legal seals.

"Mr. Daniel Vance? Mrs. Patricia Vance?" the lead Swiss officer asked in precise, accented English.

Daniel swallowed hard. "Yes? Is there a problem?"

The official opened the folder. "We are serving you with an international asset restraint notice issued by the Superior Court of the State of New York, coordinated through the Financial Crimes Division. All domestic and international accounts registered under your names, corporate entities, and associated trusts have been frozen pursuant to an ongoing criminal investigation."

"Criminal investigation?!" Patricia shrieked, her composed facade shattering instantly. "This is a outrage! On what grounds?"

The official handed Patricia a copy of the legal order. "Charges including Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, Aggravated Abuse of a Vulnerable Adult, Grand Larceny, and Tampering with Evidence. Furthermore, an emergency temporary restraining order has been issued, barring both of you from entering or liquidating any property owned jointly or individually."

Daniel felt his knees buckle. He had to grab the edge of the granite counter to keep from collapsing. "Attempted... attempted murder? Claire... Claire is alive?"

The Swiss officer gave Daniel a cold, unblinking look. "Mrs. Claire Vance was rescued from your residence late yesterday afternoon by emergency medical personnel and law enforcement. She is currently under intensive care and police protection."

The officer stepped aside, allowing a second official to step forward. "Because this order includes an immediate freeze on all liquidity, your return flight tickets have been cancelled by the issuing airline due to non-payment. You are required to report to the United States Consulate in Zurich within twenty-four hours to surrender your passports pending extradition formalization."

"Surrender our passports?!" Patricia gasped, grabbing Daniel’s arm with a grip so tight her nails bit through his shirt. "Daniel, do something! Call our lawyers!"

Daniel frantically looked at his phone screen again. A new message had just cleared the network queue. It was an email from Marcus Vance, sent directly to Daniel’s personal address.

The subject line read simple and final: Service of Process & Motion for Immediate Eviction.

Daniel opened the attachment with trembling hands. Attached was a high-resolution video file preview. The thumbnail showed Daniel standing over Claire in the bedroom, holding her phone, with Patricia in the doorway holding the prescription bag.
