Chapter 9 - Reclaiming the Legacy

By late June, the summer sun warmed the gardens of Vance Logistics headquarters.
With Daniel gone and the corporate structure cleaned of corruption, I stepped back into the role of Executive Chairwoman of the Board. I hired a brilliant young female Chief Operating Officer named Clara, an experienced logistics manager who brought fresh energy, transparency, and innovation to the firm.
Under our joint leadership, quarterly revenues rose by fifteen percent, and employee morale reached an all-time high.
On a warm Friday evening, I hosted a summer garden party at my home—1420 Crestview Drive. The white marble foyer was filled with fresh roses, the scent of lavender drifted through the open windows, and the kitchen was filled with laughter and the rich, delicious aroma of roasted herbs and wine.
Martha sat on the back patio drinking sweet tea, while several senior staff members from Vance Logistics chatted warmly by the stone fountain.
Clara walked up to me, holding two glass plates featuring slices of my famous homemade lemon tart.
“This tart is incredible, Eleanor,” Clara smiled, taking a small bite. “You really should consider selling the recipe!”
I laughed, taking a plate from her. “Thank you, my dear. I find that cooking tastes best when it’s made for people who appreciate the effort.”

Ruth walked over, joining us on the patio with a satisfied smile on her face. “I just received a call from the District Attorney’s office, Eleanor. Vanessa accepted a blind plea bargain this afternoon. Eight years in state prison, with full forfeiture of her seized assets.”
I took a slow sip of my iced tea, watching the evening light glint off the glass doors of my quiet, beautiful home. “Justice has a very clean taste, Ruth.”
