Chapter 6 - The Spider's Web

A week passed. The rain subsided, leaving the city washed clean under a crisp spring sky.

While Daniel stayed in a small, run-down studio apartment paid for by his reluctant uncle Richard, my legal team dug deeper into Vanessa’s past. What we uncovered proved that my daughter-in-law’s cruelty was not an isolated personality flaw—it was a long-term business strategy.

Ruth arrived at my home on Thursday morning accompanied by a private investigator named Frank Miller, a former police detective with grey hair and sharp, intelligent eyes.

Frank set a thick dossier on my coffee table. “Mrs. Vance, Vanessa Cross isn’t her real name. Or rather, it’s not her only name.”

I raised an eyebrow, pouring him a cup of tea. “Explain.”

“Her birth name is Vanessa Thorne,” Frank revealed, opening the file to display several public records and old newspaper clippings. “Eight years ago in Chicago, she married an heir to a regional construction firm named Gregory Hall. Within eighteen months, she managed to secure power of attorney over his personal accounts, transferred four hundred thousand dollars to offshore entities, and filed for a fraudulent divorce citing emotional cruelty.”

I stared at the photographs of a younger Vanessa standing outside a courthouse beside a broken, elderly man. “She did the exact same thing to him?”

“Identical blueprint,” Frank nodded. “She targets wealthy men with weak personalities or deep familial fractures, isolates them from their families, drains what she can through shell corporations, and moves on before the legal hammer falls. Your son wasn’t her husband, Mrs. Vance—he was her latest mark.”

“And what about the embezzlement from Vance Logistics?” I asked.

“She transferred the two hundred and twenty thousand dollars from V-Design Consulting into a private account in Nevada two days before Easter,” Ruth interjected. “She was planning to abandon Daniel the moment the holiday was over anyway. Your decision to evict them on Sunday merely accelerated her timeline.”

A cold anger, sharp and pure, burned in my chest. “Where is she now, Frank?”

“She’s staying at an expensive beachfront condo in Miami, registered under her sister’s name,” Frank smiled faintly. “She thinks she got away with it.”

I looked at Ruth. “Can we extradite her for grand larceny?”

May you like

“With the evidence Frank gathered? Absolutely,” Ruth replied. “The District Attorney has already signed the warrant. State troopers in Florida are moving to arrest her as we speak.”

I took a slow sip of my tea, looking at the portrait of my late husband hanging above the fireplace. “Good. No one destroys Arthur’s hard work and gets away with it.”
