Chapter 6 - THE SAFEHOUSE IN THE PINE BARRENS

The black armored SUV cut through the dense fog of the Pine Barrens, navigating winding dirt roads that weren't marked on any civilian map. I sat huddled in the back seat between my mother and General Graves, wrapped in a heavy wool blanket he had pulled from the vehicle’s survival kit.
It was past two in the morning. My small hands were still shaking from the sounds of gunfire on Aldridge Street, but the absolute calm in the General’s eyes gave me a strange, unshakeable sense of security.
The vehicle stopped before a massive reinforced steel gate hidden deep within the pine forest. Captain Ross stepped out, typed a complex code into a biometric scanner, and the gates swung open into an underground bunker built during the Cold War—now repurposed as Nathaniel's private, off-the-grid command post.
"It's safe here, Elena," Nathaniel said, helping my mother out of the vehicle. "The perimeter is guarded by retired operators who report directly to me, not the DOD chain of command. Sterling's satellite tracking can't penetrate forty feet of solid granite."
Inside, the bunker was warm and bright. For the first time in my eight years of life, I saw my mother let her guard completely down. She sat on a plush sofa in the main living quarters, holding a mug of hot tea with both hands.
"You said you kept the evidence, Elena," Nathaniel said, pulling up a chair opposite her while Captain Ross cleaned a light scratch on his shoulder. "What did you keep, and where is it?"
Elena took a slow sip of tea, her eyes reflecting the soft yellow light of the floor lamp.
"When Sterling's men rigged my lab twelve years ago, I knew I only had minutes before the lockdown protocols engaged," she said, her voice steady now. "I couldn't download the entire database, but I extracted the master decryption keys and the raw transaction logs onto an military-grade micro-drive. It proves that over three billion dollars in defense allocation funds were funneled into Sterling’s private mercenary group, Vanguard Apex."
"Where is the drive?" Nathaniel asked, leaning forward.
"I didn't carry it with me when I fled," Elena said, looking at me. "I was terrified that if I got caught with it, they would kill me on the spot. So late one night, right after Ruby was born, I buried it inside an airtight ammunition box beneath the base of the old bronze fountain at Aldridge Park."
Nathaniel’s eyes widened slightly. "Aldridge Park... That's less than three blocks from where Ruby found my wallet."
May you like
"I stayed close to it all these years, Nathaniel," Elena whispered, tears welling in her eyes. "I thought if things ever got so bad that we were starving, I would use it as leverage to trade for Ruby’s safety. But I never had the courage to dig it up... until now."
Nathaniel stood up, reaching for his tactical vest. "We retrieve it tonight. Before Sterling realizes what we're looking for."
