Chapter 3 - THE TWELVE-YEAR LIE

"Elena, lower the knife," Nathaniel said calmly, raising his open hands. He didn't take another step forward. "Marcus Sterling didn't send me. Ruby found my wallet on Aldridge Street and brought it to my office."
My mom looked at me, confusion mixing with horror. "Ruby... what did you do?"
"I just wanted to give it back, Mom," I cried, tears welling up in my eyes. "I saw his name on the card... I didn't know!"
Nathaniel slowly pulled his military identification and his personal ledger from his coat pocket, laying them gently on the kitchen table.
"Twelve years ago, Elena," Nathaniel said softly, "they told me you died in the lab explosion. I held a fake casualty report in my hands. I spent a year drinking myself into stupors before I poured every ounce of my life into the military just to numb the pain. I never stopped looking into the anomalies of that night, but every door was slammed shut by high-level security clearances."
Elena’s hand began to tremble. The knife lowered an inch. "You... you didn't order the perimeter breach? They told me you signed the tactical order that locked me inside the bunker..."
"I was in Kuwait, Elena!" Nathaniel said passionately, taking one step closer. "My flight logs were doctored! I would have died before letting anyone hurt you!"
Tears spilled over my mother's cheeks. The knife slipped from her fingers, clattering onto the floor. She covered her face with her hands and sobbed—a heavy, painful sound that sounded like twelve years of buried grief pouring out all at once.
Nathaniel closed the distance between them, pulling her into a tight, protective embrace. My mother rested her head against his shoulder, her shoulders shaking violently.
I stood by the doorway, holding my backpack tight. For the first time in my life, I saw my mother let someone else hold her up.

"I had to hide, Nathaniel," Elena sobbed into his chest. "I was pregnant with Ruby when the lab was attacked. I realized Sterling was stealing billions from black-budget logistics accounts. When I tried to report it, my entire team was wiped out. I barely escaped through the drainage tunnels. If they knew Ruby existed... if they knew I was alive..."
"They won't touch either of you ever again," Nathaniel vowed, his arms wrapping tightly around her. "I have five stars on my shoulders now, Elena. And I am going to tear their conspiracy to the ground."
