Chapter 8 - The Shadow of the Past

With Julian Vance disgraced and criminal charges filed against him and Vanessa, a profound peace finally settled over the Carter estate. The business recovered rapidly, but more importantly, the home was thriving.

William had hired a new, proper cooking and cleaning staff, but he refused to let me leave the mansion. "Your role has changed, Elena," he had told me with a tender smile. "You aren't the housekeeper anymore. You're the heart of this house."

However, life has a way of throwing one last hurdle before the finish line.

A few weeks after the courtroom victory, I received a phone call from an unknown number. It was a hospital in a small town three hours away. My abusive ex-husband, Marcus—the man I had fled from five years ago with nothing but Leo in my arms and twenty dollars in my pocket—had been tracked down by the authorities. He was dying of a terminal illness, and on his deathbed, he was demanding to see his son.

The fear that had slept inside me for five years flared back to life. I sat on the kitchen steps, my hands shaking, tears blurring my vision.

"Elena?"

William walked out into the hallway, instantly noticing my distress. He knelt down before me, taking my cold hands in his warm ones. "What is it? What’s wrong?"

Through tears, I told him everything. I told him about the monster I had escaped, the nights spent in shelters, the constant terror that he would find us and take Leo away. "He wants to see Leo," I sobbed. "I can't let him near my boy, William. I can't."

William’s jaw tightened, a dangerous fire igniting in his eyes. He pulled me into his arms, holding me against his chest so tightly I could feel the steady, reassuring beat of his heart.

"He will never touch you or Leo again, Elena. I swear it to you," William promised, his voice fierce with protection. "You ran alone last time. But you aren't alone anymore. I am going with you."

The next day, William drove us down to the small-town hospital. He left Mason and Luke at the estate under the careful watch of his trusted personal assistant, ensuring Leo was safely distracted playing games in the mansion's private theater room. He wanted to shield Leo from the grim reality of a father who had never loved him.

When we entered the sterile hospital room, Marcus looked pathetic. The terrifying monster of my past was shrunk into a frail, sickly man hooked up to machines.

He looked up as the door opened, a cruel sneer attempting to form on his pale face. "Elena... you finally crawled back. Where's my boy? Where's my son?"

Before Marcus could even direct his malice toward me, William stepped in front of my line of sight, shielding me completely. He looked down at Marcus with the cold, absolute authority of a man who owned the world.

"Your son is safe, and he will never know your name," William said, his voice dropping to a deadly whisper. "I am William Carter. Every legal asset I possess has been deployed to terminate your parental rights retroactively based on your criminal record of domestic abuse. You have exactly zero claim to Elena or Leo."

Marcus gasped, trying to sit up, but the machines beeped aggressively. "She’s my wife! That’s my kid!"

"Not anymore," William said firmly. "They belong with me now. If you ever try to contact them, if you even whisper their names to a nurse, I will ensure the remaining days of your life are spent in a maximum-security prison ward instead of this comfortable bed. Do you understand me?"

Marcus looked into William’s eyes and saw no mercy. He slowly sank back into his pillows, defeated, his power broken forever.

William turned around, took my hand, and led me out of the hospital into the bright afternoon sun. As we walked to the car, the heavy weight I had carried for five long years vanished into the breeze. I was finally, truly free.
