Chapter 7 - The Country Estate

The Cross family estate in Chester County sat on fifty acres of rolling hills, ancient oak trees, and a sprawling stone manor that felt a million miles away from the neon lights and danger of Philadelphia.

By mid-afternoon, the lawn was covered in a pristine blanket of fresh white snow.

Eli and Sophie were running in circles around a lopsided, three-tiered snowman that looked suspiciously like it had been constructed by two hyperactive toddlers and a very patient golden retriever.

Rachel stood on the stone patio wrapped in a red wool coat and a thick cashmere scarf, holding a steaming mug of hot cocoa with miniature marshmallows floating on top. She watched with a bright, amused smile as Damian—dressed in a heavy flannel shirt and snow boots—got flat-packed into a snowbank by a laughing four-year-old boy armed with a snowball.

"Surrender, criminal!" Eli shouted triumphantly, holding up another snowball while Sophie cheered from the sidelines.

Damian groaned dramatically, falling back into the soft drift with his arms spread wide. "I yield! The forces of justice have defeated me!"

Eli pounced on his chest, giggling uncontrollably as Damian grabbed him by the ribs and tickled him until the boy shrieked with laughter.

Rachel walked out across the lawn, her boots crunching softly in the snow. She handed the mug of cocoa to Damian as he sat up, brushing white powder out of his dark hair.

"Are you alright, Mr. Crime Lord?" Rachel teased, kneeling down beside him. "Do I need to call Dr. Vance to treat your massive ego injuries?"

Damian caught her by the waist, pulling her effortlessly onto his lap in the snow. Rachel gasped, laughing as the cold air hit her cheeks, but she didn't try to get away.

"My ego is recovering nicely," Damian murmured, resting his chin on her shoulder as they watched Eli and Sophie run off toward the golden retriever. "Though I’m thinking about retiring from the snowman-building business. My combat training didn't quite prepare me for a two-front snowball assault."

"You brought this on yourself," Rachel whispered, turning her head so her lips brushed his cheek. "You’re the one who insisted we move out here instead of staying in the city."

"The city is for ghosts, Rachel," Damian said, his voice dropping into a quiet, absolute earnestness as he tightened his arms around her. "This is for the living."

Rachel smiled, leaning back against his chest as the winter wind whispered through the oak trees above them. For three years, she had believed she was running from a monster. But sitting here in the snow, surrounded by the laughter of her children and the strong, steady arms of the man who had burned down an empire just to find her, she knew the truth.

The darkness was gone. There was only the light, the snow, and a future that belonged entirely to them.
