Chapter 6 - The Shadows Retreat

Two months later, the autumn chill gave way to the crisp, bright mornings of early winter.

The headquarters of Cross Holdings had undergone a quiet, radical transformation. The floor-to-ceiling glass offices downtown were no longer filled with the quiet panic of shady consultants and compromised politicians. Damian had spent the past eight weeks systematically purging the syndicate’s legacy assets—selling off the grey-market shipping lanes, liquidating the questionable real estate holdings, and converting his entire fortune into fully legitimate, audited tech investments and green energy infrastructure.

He walked out of the private elevator on the top floor into his executive office, carrying a briefcase in one hand and a takeaway coffee in the other.

His chief of security, Marcus, was waiting by the desk with a thick leather-bound dossier.

"Morning, boss," Marcus said, handing over the file. "Federal prosecutor’s office just finalized the paperwork on Senator Prescott’s PAC audit. It looks like the senator is stepping down early for 'health reasons'."

Damian opened the folder, scanned the single-page summary, and tossed it onto the desk. "Good. Let him retire to Florida. As long as he stays out of our way, I have no interest in kicking a dying dog."

"And the syndicate remnants in New York?" Marcus asked, his tone cautious. "They’ve been making noises about the waterfront territory we left behind."

"Tell them they can have it," Damian replied calmly, sinking into his leather executive chair. "We’re out of the shipping game, Marcus. Hale Maritime and Cross Logistics are fully dissolved. If anyone wants to fight over rusty docks and smuggled cargo, they can have the headache."

Marcus blinked, slightly taken aback. A year ago, Damian would have waged a turf war that left half the eastern seaboard burning. Now, he looked like a man who had discovered that peace was far more valuable than power.

"Understood, boss," Marcus smiled faintly. "I’ll clear your schedule for this afternoon. Mrs. Cross called from the country estate. She said the kids want you home early to help build a snowman."

Damian’s face lit up with a grin that completely transformed his usually severe features. "Tell her I’m leaving right now."
