Chapter 3 - The Lockdown

The mansion’s alarms wailed, a high-pitched, systemic shriek that caused Leo to bury his face into my shoulder, crying out in terror. Red emergency lights flashed across the library’s high ceilings, casting a bloody hue over everything.

"Gabriel! Secure the girl and the boy!" Sebastian ordered, his voice commanding and absolute. He didn't panic. He reached under the mahogany desk and pulled out a heavy-caliber silver pistol, checking the chamber with a practiced, terrifying fluidity.

"Boss, we need to move you to the bunker," Gabriel said, rushing toward us and pushing me toward a hidden panel behind a bookshelf.

"No," Sebastian growled, leaning against the desk to steady his breathing. His legs were shaking from the sudden exertion, the muscles screaming after a decade of atrophy. "Victor has been planning this mutiny for months. If I hide in a hole, I lose the empire tonight. I fight on my feet."

"Sebastian, please, my son!" I screamed over the roar of the alarms. "You brought us here to protect us!"

Sebastian looked at me, and for a fleeting moment, the ruthless mafia don vanished, replaced by a man filled with a profound, unpayable debt. "Gabriel will die before he lets anyone touch your boy, Clara. Trust him. Trust me."

Gabriel hit a button inside the hidden panel, and a section of the bookshelf slid open, revealing a narrow, concrete stairwell lit by low-voltage green strips. He shoved me inside, following tightly behind us as the heavy oak door clicked shut, sealing us in darkness, though the muffled sounds of gunfire began to echo from the floors above.

"Keep moving down, Clara," Gabriel whispered, his flashlight cutting through the damp air of the subterranean passage. "Don't look back."

We hurried down the spiraling steps, my thighs burning, my arms aching from carrying Leo’s weight. The sound of muffled explosions shook the concrete walls, dust filtering down into our hair. The estate was under full siege. Victor wasn't just trying to assassinate Sebastian; he was launching a full-scale military coup to erase the Lombardi name from Chicago.

At the bottom of the stairs, the tunnel opened into a high-tech surveillance bunker. Wall-to-wall monitors displayed every angle of the estate. Gabriel immediately rushed to the console, his fingers flying across the keyboard to lock down the master security gates.

I set Leo down on a leather cot in the corner, wrapping a blanket around his trembling shoulders. "Hey, look at me, baby," I whispered, forcing my voice to remain steady while my insides dissolved into pure panic. "We're safe here. Gabriel is a superhero, remember? He's going to make sure nothing happens to us."

Leo nodded, his tear-filled eyes looking at me with a bravery he shouldn't have had to possess at his age. "Is the nice man who can walk going to be okay?"

I looked up at the monitors. On screen three, the main hallway of the mansion was a war zone. Smoke filled the air. Three of Victor's mercenaries were advancing down the corridor, their automatic weapons firing blindly through the haze.

Then, Sebastian appeared.

He was using the marble pillars for cover, moving with a calculated, terrifying precision. He wasn't agile—he couldn't run—but his aim was flawless. With three distinct, rhythmic shots, the three mercenaries dropped to the floor. He stood tall, his chest heaving, reloading his weapon without taking his eyes off the hallway ahead.

"He's a monster," I whispered, horrified yet captivated by the sheer will power of the man.

"He's a survivor," Gabriel corrected me, his eyes glued to a different monitor showing the back perimeter. "And right now, he's outnumbered ten to one. Victor brought a small army. Clara, stay here. Lock this internal door behind me."

"Gabriel, no! You can't leave us!" I pleaded, grabbing his tactical vest.

Gabriel looked down at me, his eyes filled with a solemn, unbreakable loyalty. "If Sebastian dies tonight, there is no bunker in the world that will keep you and Leo safe. Victor will hunt you to the ends of the earth to erase the evidence of Sebastian's recovery. I have to go protect my boss."

Before I could answer, Gabriel slipped out of the heavy blast door, the lock clicking automatically into place. I was left alone in the room with the glowing screens, watching a bloody war for survival unfold before my eyes.
