Chapter 11 - The First Step of Forever

The next morning, before the heat of the summer sun caught up with the valley, Sebastian and I walked down through the rows of olive trees alone. The ground was uneven, covered in dry grass and smooth river stones—the kind of terrain that would have been a death sentence for a neurological patient a year ago.

But Sebastian walked with a relaxed, confident grace. He stopped at the edge of the cliff overlooking the turquoise waters of the sea, the wind blowing his hair back.

He turned to me, reaching into his pocket. He didn't pull out a phone, a weapon, or a contract. He pulled out a simple, elegant platinum ring set with a brilliant, flawless sapphire that matched the color of the sea below us.

"Clara," he said, his voice deep, steady, and filled with a profound emotion that made my knees feel weaker than his ever had. "When you first laid your hands on my back in that dark fortress in Chicago, you didn't just wake up my legs. You woke up my soul. You gave me a future when all I had was a bloody past."

He knelt down before me—a smooth, effortless movement on two strong knees—and looked up at me with absolute devotion. "Will you marry me, Clara? Will you take every step of the rest of this beautiful life by my side?"

I didn't hesitate. I dropped into the grass beside him, throwing my arms around his neck, pressing my lips to his as the morning sun broke over the horizon, painting the world in gold.

"Yes," I cried, laughing through tears of pure joy. "Yes, Sebastian. A million times, yes."

Behind us, from the top of the hill, we heard the joyful shouting of Leo running down the path to join us, followed by Gabriel’s laughter echoing through the trees.

Sebastian stood up, lifting me into his arms effortlessly, spinning me around under the open Italian sky. The broke physical therapist with a sick little boy had survived the mafia, broken a cage of paralysis, and found a love that was completely, beautifully free.

The war was over. The journey was complete. And every single step from that moment on belonged to forever.
