Chapter 8 - The Weight of Justice

The jury deliberated for less than three hours—a record for a federal RICO and multi-count felony trial of this magnitude.

When the court reconvened, the atmosphere inside the room was heavy with finality. The media gallery was overflowing, with camera crews waiting outside on the courthouse steps to broadcast the verdict live across the globe.

"Will the defendants please stand?" Federal Judge Reynolds commanded.

Nicholas, Patricia, and Gregory stood up slowly. Nicholas was shaking, his eyes wide with a frantic, animal terror. Patricia looked entirely hollowed out, her regal posture entirely collapsed, her hand trembling as she held onto the edge of the table for support.

"Mr. Foreman," Judge Reynolds said, looking at the lead juror. "Has the jury reached a unanimous verdict?"

"We have, Your Honor," the foreman replied, standing tall and holding a document.

"On Count One: Federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations conspiracy... how do you find the defendants?"

"Guilty," the foreman read clearly.

Patricia let out a soft, choking sob.

"On Count Two: Felony Deprivation of Rights and Unlawful Restraint under color of corporate authority..."

"Guilty."

"On Count Three: Federal Witness Intimidation and Extortion..."

"Guilty."

"On Count Four: Aggravated Felony Assault..."

"Guilty."

"On Count Five: Fraud against the United States Department of Defense..."

"Guilty."

Count by count, the verdict echoed through the silent courtroom like a drumbeat of absolute judgment. Fifteen counts in total. Fifteen unanimous guilty verdicts across all three defendants.

Nicholas suddenly slumped forward, his knees giving out entirely, sobbing loudly as two federal marshals caught him under the arms and hoisted him back up. Gregory stared blankly at the wall, completely numb, while Patricia closed her eyes, tears streaming down her pale, wrinkled face, ruining her makeup.

Judge Reynolds turned his attention to the sentencing phase.

"In my thirty years on the federal bench," Judge Reynolds said, his voice cold and uncompromising, "I have rarely witnessed such a egregious display of arrogance, cruelty, and complete disregard for human dignity and federal law. You utilized your vast wealth not to build up your community, but to construct a private fortress of lawlessness where you believed you could abuse, intimidate, and destroy lives with impunity."

He looked directly at Nicholas. "Nicholas Ferguson, for the charges of aggravated assault, unlawful restraint, extortion, and RICO conspiracy, I sentence you to thirty-two years in federal prison, without the possibility of parole."

Nicholas let out a horrified wail, burying his face in his hands as the marshals immediately snapped heavy iron chains around his waist and wrists.

"Patricia Ferguson," the judge continued, shifting his gaze to the matriarch. "For your role as the principal organizer of this criminal enterprise, witness tampering, and military contract fraud, I sentence you to twenty-eight years in federal custody. Furthermore, under federal asset forfeiture laws, all corporate assets of Ferguson Logistics, the Myers Park estate, and associated financial accounts are hereby seized by the United States government."

Patricia didn't utter a sound. She simply stared straight ahead as the marshals stepped forward to lock her in irons.

"Gregory Ferguson," Judge Reynolds concluded. "For your role in the conspiracy and active obstruction of justice, I sentence you to fourteen years in federal custody."

The judge brought his gavel down with a sharp, echoing CRACK.

"Court is adjourned."

The marshals immediately began leading the three defendants away toward the secure holding area behind the courtroom. As Nicholas was being led past the prosecution table, he caught sight of Abigail standing beside me.

"Abigail... please!" Nicholas cried out, his voice cracking with desperation, tears streaming down his face. "Tell them! Tell them to stop! I loved you!"

Abigail stood tall, looking at him without a single trace of fear, pity, or anger left in her eyes. She simply looked through him as if he were a ghost.

"You never loved me, Nicholas," Abigail said softly, her voice carrying through the clearing courtroom. "You just loved the power you thought you had over me. And now, you have nothing."

Nicholas was pulled through the door, his desperate cries fading down the concrete hallway, until the heavy steel doors slammed shut, sealing him away from the world.
