Chapter 2 - Lines in the Sand

The atmosphere in Emergency Department Room 104 transformed within thirty minutes. The casual, arrogant dominance the Ferguson family had exerted over the hospital staff dissolved as three black SUVs with government plates pulled up to the ambulance bay, accompanied by two marked North Carolina State Highway Patrol cruisers.

Major David Harrison, a broad-shouldered Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID) agent in crisp civilian attire, strode through the doors alongside Captain Thomas Miller of the State Highway Patrol. The hospital administration, which had previously been hesitant to intervene against the influential Ferguson family, suddenly found itself entirely sidelined as federal and state officers took control of the corridor.

"Colonel Gardner," Major Harrison said, offering a crisp, respectful nod as he entered the room. "Special Agent Vance briefed me on the way over. We have secured the perimeter and established a chain of custody for all physical evidence."

"Thank you, Major," I replied, standing beside Abigail's bed. I had wrapped my Army trench coat around her shoulders, shielding her bruised body from the intrusive light of the room. "Captain Miller, I want forensic photos taken immediately. I want a full rape kit and trauma evaluation administered by an independent, state-certified forensic nurse. No hospital staff affiliated with the Ferguson Foundation are to enter this room."

Captain Miller nodded grimly. "Already handled, Colonel. I've brought in a specialized SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) team from the university hospital. They're setting up now. As for the individuals outside..."

He gestured toward the hallway, where Patricia, Gregory, and Nicholas were currently being held in place by two uniformed state troopers. Patricia was furiously typing on her phone, her face pale with rage, while Gregory argued animatedly with a trooper.

"They're claiming immunity based on local jurisdictional conflicts," Miller continued, rubbing his chin. "Patricia Ferguson called the District Attorney directly. DA Vance called my chief five minutes ago, suggesting we 'handle this quietly' to avoid public panic."

"Of course he did," I said, my eyes narrowing. "District Attorney Marcus Vance received over two hundred thousand dollars in campaign contributions from the Ferguson Logistics PAC during the last election cycle. He's in their pocket."

"Which is why," Major Harrison chimed in, "we are pulling in federal oversight. Because Nicholas Ferguson utilized interstate transport—specifically moving your daughter across state lines from your property in South Carolina to their estate in North Carolina under false pretenses—and because of the physical restraint involved, the FBI’s Violent Crimes Task Force has opened a preliminary inquiry."

Abigail stirred in the bed, letting out a soft, pained groan as the nurse adjusted her IV line. I immediately dropped to my knees beside her, taking her small hand in mine.

"Mom..." she whispered, her voice trembling. "They... they took my laptop. They have all my work, my journals... everything. Nicholas said he would release private videos if I went to the police."

A surge of white-hot fury roared through my veins, but I forced my expression to remain serene. I smoothed a strand of hair away from her swollen forehead. "He won't release anything, baby. I promise you. I am going to tear his life apart piece by piece before he ever gets the chance to hurt you again."

I stood up and turned to Harrison and Miller. "You heard that. Extortion, blackmail, and illegal seizure of property. I want a search warrant for the Ferguson estate in Myers Park immediately."

"A warrant for that property takes time, Colonel," Miller said cautiously. "Judges in this county are very hesitant to sign off on a raid against a family of that stature without ironclad physical evidence."

"Then we get an emergency federal warrant based on the ongoing threat of extortion and unlawful restraint," I said flatly. "I have contacts at the Department of Justice in DC who will sign off on a federal search authorization within two hours. Harrison, get your team ready."

I walked out into the corridor, my heels clicking sharply against the linoleum floor. Patricia Ferguson caught sight of me and immediately pushed past a trooper, stepping directly into my path.

"This is an outrage, Sarah!" she shouted, dropping the formal title in her anger. "You are abusing your military position to wage a personal vendetta against my family! My son loved your daughter! He took her in when she had nothing!"

"He beat her, Patricia," I said, stopping inches from her face, my voice quiet, dead, and utterly devoid of mercy. "He bruised her body, he locked her in a room like an animal, and he threatened her life. And you covered it up."

"She is a liar!" Nicholas yelled from behind his mother, his face flushed red with alcohol and panic. "She hit herself! She's crazy! Ask anyone! She’s mentally unstable!"

I didn't even look at Nicholas. My eyes remained locked on Patricia.

"I spent twenty-eight years planning logistics for combat operations in Mosul, Kandahar, and Fallujah," I said, my tone sending a visible shiver down her spine. "I have dismantled terror networks far larger, far richer, and far smarter than your pathetic, corrupt little family. You think your money protects you? You think your political favors make you untouchable? You have no idea what is coming for you."

"Are you threatening me, Colonel?" Patricia hissed.

"No, Patricia," I whispered, leaning in closer so only she could hear. "A threat is a promise of violence. I am offering you a promise of absolute, unmitigated destruction. I will strip your family of its wealth, its reputation, its freedom, and its legacy. I will not stop until every single person who touched my daughter or helped cover it up is sitting in a federal prison cell."

May you like

Before Patricia could respond, I turned on my heel and walked toward the emergency room exit, pulling out my phone to call the one man who could help me burn the Ferguson empire to the ground: General Richard Vance, Head of the Army Inspector General's Office—and the father of Special Agent Vance.

The war had officially begun.
