Chapter 8 - A New Foundation

With the past firmly behind us, Valeria decided she wanted to pursue her own dreams. She enrolled in night classes at the local university, studying social work and child psychology.

She wanted to use her experience to help women who found themselves trapped in abusive, coercive domestic situations like the one Roberto had forced her into.

I remembered the frail, terrified woman I had found sitting by the trash bins a year and a half ago. Now, watching her stand at a podium giving a presentation to her university classmates about economic abuse and survivor advocacy, I was overwhelmed with awe. She had transformed her trauma into an unstoppable power.

Mateo grew into a healthy, energetic four-year-old boy. His medical checkups were flawless; the dark days of his early childhood were fading into forgotten shadows, replaced by memories of soccer games in the yard, bedtime stories, and parents who cherished his very existence.

One evening, Valeria brought home a small legal document. She laid it on the dining table in front of me.

"What's this?" I asked, looking up from my engineering blueprints.

"It's the foundation paperwork," she smiled, her eyes shining. "I'm starting a non-profit clinic with Attorney Sofia Morales. We're calling it El Refugio de Valeria. We’re going to offer free legal aid, emergency housing, and financial literacy training for women and children in Jalisco who have been abandoned or exploited."

I looked at the paper, then up at my wife. "How much funding do you need to get the doors open?"

"We already have grants," she grinned proudly. "But... a seed donation from a very talented local chief engineer wouldn't hurt."

I laughed, pulling her into my lap and kissing her deeply. "Consider it done, Director."
