Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

Reporters, court clerks, and spectators surged against the wooden barriers as the federal marshals walked up the steps of the bench, escorting a pale, silent Judge Vance down from his seat.

In the center of the well, Evan Whitmore stood frozen, his eyes darting frantically from the marshals to the gallery doors, realizing that every exit was blocked.

Two FBI agents stepped down the center aisle, handcuffs glinting under the bright courtroom lights.

"Evan Whitmore and Madison Vale," the lead agent announced. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, interstate transport of stolen property, forgery, and criminal conspiracy."

Madison burst into frantic tears, dropping her briefcase onto the floor, scattering fake legal documents across the carpet. "It was Evan! It was all Evan's idea! He told me we’d get twelve million dollars! He forged the signatures!"

"Shut up, Madison!" Evan screamed, his face contorted in ugly, desperate fury. "Shut your mouth!"

The agents grabbed Evan’s arms, forcing his hands behind his back.

As the steel handcuffs clicked around his wrists, Evan twisted his body around, staring wildly across the table at Claire.

Claire stood calmly beside Arthur Sterling, watching her husband with quiet, unflinching composure.

"Claire!" Evan yelled, his voice cracking with desperation. "Claire, tell them! Tell them this is a mistake! You’re my wife! You love me! Think about Oliver! Think about our son!"

Claire walked slowly toward him.

The marshals paused, allowing her to step within three feet of the man who had tried to erase her life.

Evan leaned toward her, tears of fear welling in his eyes, his voice dropping into a frantic, pleading whisper. "Claire... please. Stop this. I’ll give everything back. We can fix this. I did it for us! I did it so we could be rich, so Oliver could have everything!"

Claire looked down at the pale ring mark still visible on his finger.

"You didn't do it for Oliver, Evan," Claire said, her voice smooth, quiet, and razor-sharp. "You did it for yourself. You thought I was weak because I was kind. You thought I was stupid because I trusted you."

She reached into her purse, pulled out a folded white document, and tucked it neatly into the front pocket of his charcoal suit coat—right above his heart.

Evan looked down at the document tab.

PETITION FOR IMMEDIATE DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE AND SOLE LEGAL AND PHYSICAL CUSTODY OF OLIVER WHITMORE AND UNBORN CHILD.

Evan’s jaw trembled. "Claire... no..."

"And there’s one more thing, Evan," Claire whispered, leaning close to his ear so only he could hear. "The toxicologist analyzed the chamomile tea you made me on Friday night. The FBI has the specimen jar, the video recording of you preparing it, and the chemical analysis."

Evan’s eyes widened in absolute, soul-crushing terror. His knees buckled, and he would have collapsed onto the floor if the two FBI agents hadn't held him upright by his arms.

"Attempted poisoning of a pregnant spouse carries a twenty-year mandatory minimum in federal prison, Evan," Claire said softly, looking him dead in the eyes. "Enjoy Miami."

The agents yanked Evan around and hauled him down the center aisle.

The courtroom gallery watched in stunned silence as Evan Whitmore—the rising star of Harlan, Pierce & Lowe—was dragged away in chains, screaming his wife’s name into the empty corridor until his voice faded into nothingness.
