Chapter 6 - Room 402

The Kings County Supreme Courthouse on Adams Street was an imposing marble structure built to convey the absolute, unyielding authority of the law.
At 8:45 a.m. on Monday morning, the fourth-floor hallway outside Courtroom 402 was bustling with lawyers, court clerks, and nervous litigants.
Evan Whitmore stood near the tall mahogany doors, wearing his finest charcoal chalk-stripe suit. Beside him stood Madison Vale, looking radiant in an ivory linen skirt suit, holding a leather briefcase containing the forged codicil and the custody petition draft.
"Is Vance in chambers?" Evan asked softly, leaning down to Madison.
"He arrived twenty minutes ago," Madison whispered back, her glossed lips curving into a confident smile. "The federal marshals are doing their routine security sweeps in the building, but Uncle Jonathan assured me our matter is first on the docket. It’ll take fifteen minutes max."
Evan checked his gold watch. 8:52 a.m.
"Where is she?" Madison murmured, looking toward the elevators. "She isn't backing out, is she?"
"She won't back out," Evan smirked. "She’s terrified, confused, and probably sick from her morning sickness. She’ll shuffle in here like a quiet mouse."
At 8:55 a.m., the elevator doors opened.
Claire Whitmore stepped out.
Evan’s confident smile instantly froze.
Claire was not wearing the weary sweater or the drawn, pale face she had worn all weekend.
She wore a breathtaking, tailored sapphire-blue silk dress beneath a sharp dark wool coat. Her blonde hair was styled in an elegant, immaculate chignon. Her skin was radiant, her makeup flawless, and her posture was as straight and proud as a queen walking toward a throne.
Walking on her right was Judge Arthur Sterling, wearing his formal dark suit and holding a thick leather briefcase.
Walking on her left were two men in dark suits wearing brass lapel pins—Special Agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Madison gasped softly, taking a involuntary step back behind Evan. "Evan... who are those people with her?"
Evan’s heart gave a violent, sickening thud against his ribs. "That’s... that’s Arthur Sterling. He’s retired. He doesn't practice anymore."
Claire walked down the center of the marble corridor, her high heels clicking loudly against the floor, every eye in the hallway turning to watch her. She did not look like a victim. She looked like an executioner.
She stopped three feet in front of Evan.
"Good morning, Evan," Claire said, her voice calm, melodious, and perfectly audible in the quiet hallway. "You look surprised to see me."
Evan swallowed hard, forcing a tight, nervous laugh as he stepped forward. "Claire... what is this? Who are these men? Why did you bring Arthur?"
"I brought Arthur to make sure the legal paperwork is executed properly today, Evan," Claire said smoothly, her gray eyes locking onto his with terrifying intensity. "After all, you said Aunt Catherine’s estate was complicated."
The double doors of Courtroom 402 opened.
"All rise for the Honorable Judge Jonathan Vance!" the bailiff announced.
Evan tried to grab Claire’s arm, his voice dropping into a desperate, furious whisper. "Claire, whatever game you think you’re playing, stop it right now! Step into the courtroom and let me handle this!"
Claire looked down at his hand on her sleeve, then looked back up into his eyes with a cold, terrifying smile.

"Keep your hands off me, Evan," she said softly. "You’re making a scene in front of the federal agents."
Before Evan could process the sentence, Claire turned and walked through the mahogany doors into the courtroom, leaving her husband standing in the marble hallway as the trap finally sprung shut around his neck.
