Chapter 7 - Reclaiming the Castle

The week following the arrests was a whirlwind of legal action, corporate restructuring, and deep healing.
I immediately shut down my corporate operations for a full month, delegating all executive responsibilities to my trusted chief operating officer in Tokyo. For the first time in five years, my phone was turned off. My only priority was Emily.
I hired a team of high-end interior designers, contractors, and landscapers. Within forty-eight hours, every piece of furniture my mother and sister had touched was removed from the mansion and donated to local charities.
The master suite was completely gutted and rebuilt from scratch. We installed warm hardwood floors, sweeping velvet drapes, and a massive custom bed overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The small storage closet where Emily had been forced to sleep was knocked down, expanding our private suite into a bright, airy sunroom filled with exotic plants and comfortable reading armchairs.
One afternoon, as the contractors were finishing the new garden patio, Emily and I sat on the terrace overlooking the city skyline.
She was wearing a soft white silk dress, her skin regaining its natural healthy glow, her hair shining in the warm sunlight. The raw, irritated marks on her hands had healed under the care of a private dermatologist.
"It feels surreal," Emily whispered, leaning her head against my shoulder as I wrapped my arm around her waist. "For three years, I felt like a ghost walking through this house. Now... it finally feels like a home."
"It’s your home, sweetheart," I said, handing her a thick leather folder stamped with a gold notary seal. "Open it."
Emily opened the folder. Inside were the newly registered property deeds, corporate stock certificates, and bank account trust documents.
"What is this?" she asked, her eyes scanning the legal text.
"It’s a total legal restructuring of my entire empire," I explained gently. "Fifty percent of every restaurant, every real estate parcel, and every holding company is now officially registered under your name. The remaining fifty percent is placed in a joint trust where neither of us can make a single transaction without the other's written consent."
Emily looked up at me, tears glistening in her eyes. "Daniel... you didn't have to do this. I never wanted your money."
"I know you didn't," I smiled, kissing her forehead softly. "That's why you are the only person on this earth I trust with it. You loved me when I was broke, Emily. This isn't just money—it's security. No one will ever be able to question your place in this world again."
Suddenly, my private secretary walked onto the terrace, holding a secure tablet.
"Mr. and Mrs. Carter," she said respectfully. "Victoria Vance is on line one. She has an update regarding the grand jury hearing."
I took the phone, putting it on speaker. "Victoria, what's the news?"
"The grand jury has returned a full forty-two-count indictment," Victoria’s triumphant voice echoed through the speaker. "Grand financial fraud, identity theft, corporate embezzlement, and conspiracy. The District Attorney has refused any plea bargains that do not include mandatory state prison time."
I looked at Emily. She held my hand, giving me a firm, decisive nod.

"Tell the DA we press for the maximum sentences," I ordered. "No deals. No leniency."
"Understood," Victoria replied. "The trial date is set for two months from now. Enjoy your peace, Daniel. They are never coming back."
